34.03: Robot of Sherwood

I like Clara better as well.

I couldn't watch the Ponds so missed a huge amount of Matt Smith's term as Doctor for me they felt like a step back.

Having said that Peter Capaldi is reminding me a bit Sylvester McCoy so I am enjoying him immensely.

Surprisingly, I quite liked this and I didn't expect to. The jokes were funny too. I still think it was far too close to the story of 'The Time Warrior' but then robots and exploding spaceships are fairly stock in trade for Doctor Who stories in any case. (At least there wasn't a count down clock timing to the explosion that he had to stop with only seconds to go by pressing some big red button.) I did wonder why, when the Sheriff was only interested in the Gold he could find, that he could offer a Gold arrow as a prize. Even more so, when it became apparent there was not enough Gold, but no more suspension of disbelief necessary that is usual. There would be no story if not for that arrow.

I thought it was fairly ok. I think Jenna's carrying it for now as Capaldi isn't doing it for me.

The previous two (David & Matt) seemed to carry through an element of the previous doctor whilst making it their own. Capaldi for me feels like a new character with no connections to any of the previous doctors, which I think is why he's not growing on me.

How familiar are you with the previous doctors?

My familiarity is only in that I've watched the show. I'm only thinking about the rebooted series.

It's just a feeling. Sometimes feelings don't have a logical thought process behind them.

You have to be careful with closed captions.

I still remember an episode of, 'Voyager,' captioned by an idiot, where ,'Maquis,' was gloriously mistranslated as , 'Marquee,' - it took me more than a week to get rid of the image of a giant tent roaming the Badlads.

Ahh that explains a lot. I think Capaldi so far has mostly channeled classic Doctors. I get really strong Pertwee, Hartnell and (to a lesser extant) Tom Baker vibes from his performances so far. Although there was a bit of Matt Smith and Tennant is his performance during "Deep breath".

I must be too young to remember the previous incarnation ;) will see how it goes. It is his character now.

"This time, the rebellion looks serious, sir."
The Legate looked puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"They're not the usual disorganised rabble, sir." The Gul frowned. "This time, they're acting with intent...."

Most of them were before my time as well. Dailymotion has a good deal of Classic Who available to watch for free for those interested. I would highly recommend checking some out.

I enjoyed it. I think it was mostly aimed at the younger members of the audience, but still it was funny, entertaining and fast paced. I loved the bickering between Robin and the Doctor. And did I imagine it, or were there several nods to Maid Marion and her Merry Men?

A lot funner* than last week's. A couple of "...erm, you wouldn't pull a bow like," that moments (daughter Number Two is an archer) but enough jokes to carry me over... until the 'adding the last bit of gold by shooting an arrow at a spaceship as it takes off' bit which well and truly sank the whole episode. My worry about Capaldi though is that there appears to be a clause in his contract requiring him to fall into liquid every episode. Three episodes in and its happened three times. I can't work out whether this is ticking the Weekly Matt Smith Obligatory Physical Comedy Moment or that someone in the Beeb has run the demographics and is trying to get more middle-aged women on board, "What we need is a Mr Darcy Moment!"

Why can't Clara fall in? I'd pay to see that!

*it is now.

and the reappearance of an implement often used by the Seventh Doctor.
Was that the syringe Twelve used to analyse the blood of the lute player?

I'm fairly certain it was the use of a spoon... (yes, disappointing I know :))

I'm sure I remember McCoy using spoons at some point (perhaps even playing them?...)
