The Irwin Allen TV Series And Movie Thread

...
The Swarm about killer bees is not a very good , Beyond the Poseidon Adventure really bad and his final theatrical film The Day the World Ended , abysmal.
I saw the Swarm several years ago. To me, it broke the unwritten law that children must not be killed, much less en mass. Unlike the other disaster films, as I recall, there really was no victory at the ending, the hero could not say, "well, hundreds of people, including dozens of children were painfully killed, but it could have been worse" I was taken by surprise at any more than that one kid who found the hive being stung to death. You just do not show that kind of thing!

The Day the World Ended sounds like my kind of film!

I think the thing that makes a good concept for a show turn into a poor series, is that Allen, as I understand it, created the shows, but had little to do with them after that. The people who actually write the scripts, went way out on a limb, far away from the creators' ideas, & may have disregarded his desires.

If I were to create a series, I would start by establishing the basic premise, the characters & their backstories, & rules for the script writers to follow. This may be the most extensive part, stating what types of stories are not to be written. I would also, from time to time, check out the scripts they were writing. I had watched the 1st 4 seasons of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. But, it had seemed to lose its way since the 1st few seasons, & during s5, I lost interest. Of course, GR was dead 10 years before it even started.

Andomeda lost its way after season 2. The Commonwealth reunification shows have happed in the 4th season.

Iwin Allen was never a serious science fiction guy. He was more interested in action adventure thrills and spills and did care softy scientific plausibility . But in all fairness , he want alone in this .

The Return of Captain Nemo with Jose Ferrer 1978 lasted only about 4 episodes . Two navy divers find the Nautilus and Captain Nemo hibernation . He's on a quest for Atlantis but he has face of again an evil genius played by Burgess Meredith . I ended it the far time I saw it and was dinapinted that it did go long er . But in respect its really wasn't a very good show. the sad part is with better writing , it could been a very successful series.

I feel a need to binge on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.:D
