It gets a lot of flack but the series has a sense of scale, zombie mutations that no one has a clue about and people aren't hyper compatent/mind numbingly dumb.
Anachronisms by Christopher Heinz. Earth Ship encounters a seemingly harmless alien life form. As basic as this sounds, The overall story concept of is quite impressive.
Absolutely. Neal Asher knows how to make the reader squirm through his often supremely graphic passages. If you haven't tried him, I'd suggest starting with Skinner, the first in his Spatterjay trilogy. If you like it, the two sequels, The Voyage of the Sable Keech and Orbus make for a satisfying traversal of a very grim tale about some alarming parasitic creatures and some equally creepy off-world alien predators. And, along the way, you'll be introduced to Sniper, the old war drone, my favorite Asher character.
