If it's a paranormal story...is the guy entirely normal? Maybe he's going to drink her blood or eat her soul. Or maybe sacrifice her trying to raise his demon god (Cthulhu, I'm looking at you!).

And you only reveal his true evil after the class/new money/looks at every girl/is abusive/etc reason that gives your MC a hard time ("You just don't think he's good enough for her, and who are you to judge, you're just the gardener!)
