It's January. What are you reading?

I had Irondead by Wolfgang Hohlbein as audio book. (Just finished.) But seriously, it wasn´t really worth. It was basically something with big spiders and lots of action.

Now I am reading In dunklen Gegenden by Thomas Ballhausen. It is from a small Austrian publishing house with no translation into English available. They are slightly speculative stories in a high quality of style.

Finished van Vogt's "The Book of Ptath". (Crikey, what a mess :))

Now on to a PG Wodehouse, "Picadilly Jim".

The Book of Ptath
is completely bonkers. I haven't read anything quite like it, and I have a sentimental soft spot for the novel.

I am about 1/3 of the way therough The Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. Quite enjoying it. Gnomic echoes of JG Ballard, although I suspect that the secrets will be properly revealed in the end.

Yes, it has the feel of a book bashed out without any revision on a wet Wednesday afternoon, so the highly imaginative author could pay the overdue rent.

I'm sad to say I couldn't get on with The Alchemist of Souls. I wasn't engaged by anything but the setting and 200 pages in the sex was all getting a bit too much. A shame because I LOVE the concept of those pioneering Vikings settling in the New World and trading with the indigenous people. Just wasn't right for me.

Little Brother
by Cory Doctorow

is the latest winner of the random number generator. Looking forward to this as I have listened to the author on several podcasts.

Funnily enough Right Ho, Jeeves is probably my next off the pile :D Need something to cheer up my current cold, dark electricity free house:(

just finished with strands of sorrow, book four by John ringo of zombie apocalipse world. i love faith. kudos she wolf :)

Apologies, didn't look too closely as didn't want any spoilers, will certainly compare opinions in more depth once I've finished it!

Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear - good but a little heavy on the science and a little light on the plot. More here.
Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence - a little too brutal for my tastes but a great page turner all the same. More here.
Complicity by Iain Banks - this is mainstream Banks rather than SF Banks and an excellent thriller it is. More here and a question for anyone else who's read it.

just finished with emergence. book 2 og galactic wars, Raymond weil. hope it continues to get better

About to start Revolt in 2100 by Robert A. Heinlein (1953, but it's actually a revision of three stories from 1939 and 1940; the short novel "If This Goes On ---" and the shorter pieces "Coventry" and "Misfit.") It's all about a religious dictatorship in the future USA, the rebellion against it, and those who don't fit into the society that results afterwards. It should be interesting to see some of Heinlein's earliest, Pre-WWII work (even if rewritten to some extent.)

About to start on Billy's Monsters by Vincent Holland-Keen. Fox Spirit is the publisher. Heard the author read an extract at the last British SF/F York Pub meet so expectations are high for this one.
