DISCUSSION -- February 2015 75-word Writing Challenge

mosaix - A classic story that combines slight of hand with possible cop corruption. It is nice to see the cop is that one step of the thief, so the poor criminal gets completely blamed for the theft, while the officer can go home with a full pocket. Makes you wonder who is the worst one. Nice choice of name for the criminal, Dickens would be proud.

Phyrebrat - a great little tale that elegantly twists slight of hand with magic. It is told quite lightly but there is something very sinister at its core. A couple desperate to escape the pull of the parade, and the feeling of lucky escape that is snatched away from both the reader and the protagonist in a pitch perfect last sentence.

StilLearning - A warning to anyone who makes the mistake of dialling when drunk. Sometimes a wrong number might be a little more sinister than upsetting the person on the other end. I'm not entirely certain that our poor 'victim' didn't intend calling hell, but the result is the same. A great last line that made me chuckle.

martin321 - Another great tale that shows the dangers of what we perceive as being fun and the truth that lies behind it. A rather lacklustre troupe might seem to be boring so of course dinosaurs would be exciting. The obvious truth is that dinosaurs and exciting equals chaos and blood bath. They're dinosaurs for goodness sake! Greta fun.

Azzagorn - a clever little piece that tells a straightforward story with the perfect amount of information, and in a perfect way to give parallels to something completely different. This is the brilliance of the piece, that no matter how you try and look at it innocently other thoughts pervade and you see something else entirely.

Cul- A story that can be broken down quite nicely, each paragraph sending another emotion in the readers direction. There is the excitement of being caught up in the festival, of chasing a figure. The surprise and hope, followed by disappointment and loss, followed by something that might even be hope, but there is something incredibly sinister there.

Darkchrome - a nebulous story that is filled with hope. A sick young lady finds that the twisting of a fairground ride might cure her illness - it could be that the thrill of the ride, recalling youth is enough to perform the magic, or is it something more momentary, when the ride stops the reality returns? Good choice of song as well.

MB - What on Earth can be said about a story that attacks the reader with such a brilliantly preposterous conceit? The imagery is superlative, and somewhat disturbing. Who knew that such twisted horrors would have such fun? Although wearing drag is just... genius or disturbing, I have yet to decide. (Pyan would love this).

Perp - What??? He hasn't posted yet? THis is the latest he has ever gone? What is up with the man? Someone give him a slap will you?

Just slipped mine in, I really thought I might miss out this month due to time constraints both at work and home.

I found it a really challenge this month anyway, but here we go I did not miss my first challenge since I started doing them which is more important than the drivel I spout ;)

Hey Perp, since I don't see any of the ladies around to do this...

SLAP!!!!

Perp,

I'm with you. This challenge just didn't connect with me. At almost the last minute, far later than I've ever posted before, I got an idea. I think a lot of my problem is that I despise holidays that are related to the dark side and then you throw magic on top of it. Argh! But I got something up. So we'll see.

Ow!!! Ratsy! Open hand, not closed fist!!!! ;)

WinterLight - if they weren't told so well I would not be able to understand them!

Parson - I had three stories before I settled on the final one; the first I totally missed the point of the challenge, the second just did not feel as though it worked, and the third was the springboard to my final version. The first though was the one I liked the most, very light and happy. Not what was needed...

SB – If there is a particular brand of craziness on the Chrons then this is it, fortunately it is nothing but the best and highly entertaining to boot. A werewolf, who was also a crime boss!!! It’s the craziest takedown of the week, but it is pure entertainment, you cannot help but delight at the madcap tale and the way in which it is told.

Thanks for the review PM. It's nice to see you back in action.

Will-a-curs!!! I've got to catch up on reading stories. Hokey Crumb-cake!!!

A few hours till midnight with 49 entries in - give me one more and make it 50.

Among the reliables missing we find (I think) alchemist, Boneman, David Evil Overlord, jastius, TheDustyZebra and Ursa major.

And many thanks to perp for the commentary.

Sorry Folks can’t contain myself any longer so I'll get the ball rolling.

When I saw the genre, I was perturbed.
I was vaguely familiar with Magical Realism, having read a little bit of Rushdie and GG Marquez, but was not sure how to write or eventually judge it. What I recall struck me when from reading those authors though was the mood and atmosphere of the writing.
In choosing between the entries this month I had a tendency to look for that mood. I suspect that has ultimately led me away from some clever and original pieces in what was a really strong field, so sorry to those authors. But here are mine
Long List
Penny’s Last Geaming- Phyrebat
A Baragin at Twice the Price- TDZ
Boto- Juliana

Short List
Devils Don’t Dance- Ashleyne.- There was an innocence about this story that belies the darker plot.
The Flame of Love- Kerry Buchanan- A brief and magical love story.
They all have Floats Roud Here- Moonbat. An original twist, rather than take the mundane and make it magical, take the otherworldly and make it mundane. Hilarious.
Vote*
Scream, If you Want to Go Faster- Darkchrome.
Those that know me would attest to the fact that I am quite vain, with a well developed (some would say overinflated) view of my own talents.
This is a story I wish I had written. I think it is almost perfect, a beautiful story, beautifully told.
