100 Word Anonymous Writing Challenge Feb 2015

Silver Lining

I waved my wand – right, left, up and down.

A little cloud. Just a tiny one. I’d wanted bigger, but it didn’t happen.

Not much fun, when an apprentice wizard needs to prove he’s strong and impress the prettiest girl in Class Three.

I did not know how cruel she’d be. Christine laughed. “Is that all you’ve got? I’ve seen bigger in Junior School!”

Harsh indeed. And I’d sent her a Valentine’s card and chocolates. Interesting, though, how she tenderly collected my cloud and carried it home in her raincoat pocket.

Perhaps there’s hope for me, after all.

It's still day 1

"Who am I?"
I know I'm in my apartment, but my memory chip is empty. Putting on my glasses, I flick through my accounts, but they're all blank: social media, emails, pictures.
Ash is falling in the streets outside, people in unmoving cars that seem to have forgotten their purpose too. In the distance a building is aflame, the words "Amazon Web Services" just recognisable. The news says Google has struck Seattle again. Funny, I don’t remember them striking before.
In the bottom drawer I find a notebook, yellowed and crinkly. In a shaky, unpractised hand I write:
"Day 1"

Invasion

It’s smothering me, yet I can almost see through it.

The foul stench envelopes me like a fog. It wants me. I want to fight, but it’s so strong.

Oh my God, the reek is unbearable. I feel myself slipping away. The darkness surrounds me. I going now …

I spring upright in bed the light sheet sticking to my sweat soaked chest. Air surges into my tortured lungs.

I laugh aloud. “A dream, just a bloody dream.”

I laugh again and lick my lips. I taste the foulness on my tongue and scream from the bottom of my soul.

Done By The Book

Barney should never have bought the second-hand book shop. All he did was read. He slipped his book under the counter as a customer approached.

“You got ‘The Cloud’ by Amrit Sengal?”

“The mind reader’s Bible?”

“That’s the one.”

“You read it?”

“No. Have you a copy?”

“Maybe I could get one. What’s it worth?”

“Well say… ten dollars?”

“More like a thousand.”

“What!?”

“Come on. That’s a rare book.”

“Okay. Fifty dollars. My last offer!”

“Five hundred.”

“Two-fifty. That’s all I have.”

“I know,” said Barney, retrieving his copy of ‘The Cloud’ from under the counter.
