Fantasy Quest type story

Maybe my Faerie, the Settled Folk, the Fair Folk might sparkle a little if too hot ... as some of them are Telepaths, Shapeshifters or both, hence "Glamour". Some sort of subtle sparkle sounds appropriate. At the minute they seem a bit ordinary to me. My Dwarves, elves and very weird Dryads are coming on OK. I've got requests for Ogres. Have to think about that!

My daughter points out that in fact my "otherworld" is at a Renaissance Period of Science and Technology, even when one excludes recent illicit imports via a portal.
So to get some coherent background I'm researching Europe 1300 to 1790 (From first mechanical clocks to just before the Battery which is 1798 according to the 1898 centenary celebration in France even though some sources give 1800). The Renaissance Period seems to be generally regarded as 13th to 17th Century.

Of course it doesn't have to be exact, but certain techniques, technologies, maths, science and inventions make other inventions inevitable, so one has to be careful what is added and subtracted.

Also best to ignore plans for things that were never realised (Many of Da Vinci's) or failed due to lack of engineering resources (Babbage's computers).
