Promoting my work

Sorry, I meant with your own domain. I was looking at wix.com with the idea of setting up my own full domain through them, but to get email addresses that use @mydomain.org , I'd have to pay someone else separately and link their service to wix. It just seems like an odd hole in an otherwise quite complete service offering.

Typically you can get email with your domain name. It will cost around $10/year. The biggest problem with many of these services is that they struggle with doing any sort of mass mailing. I personally use my own mail server to get around the problem.

I just did some quick googling and found that Arvixe.com seems to be the best all-around choice. They have support for email with your domain name, wordpress, domain names, etc etc, and the price is pretty good. Plus PC Mag gave them Editors Choice in a comparison article.

1. Hosting a business website on a free provider always looks amateur.
2. Wix - many similar companies have come and gone. You really don't want your business assets locked into a single company like this.
3. You really want to control your own data, where possible. That means buying your own domain name (ie, from 123-reg.co.uk) and hosting it yourself.
4. Official web hosting recommendations are overwhelmingly paid for. Ask for personal ones, or visit WHT (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/)
5. I've offered to help explain to anyone how to set up their own website. Just ask.

Couldn't agree with you more Brian for all the points that you raised.

In my case, the problem isn't knowledge, it's time. I've set up my own website, for my shareware company. While the admin overhead isn't high once you get it done, it's still a PITA to worry about. For my author site, I just want to set and forget.

Hey Chris, how is Wix? I'm thinking of a website. I don't like Wordpress because they won't let you post links to sell. An acquaintance got banded from them and now his Wordpress page says he's banded, which paints a bad rep for him as an author. They also won't take it off their site. Happened a couple years ago. Hopefully it's down now.
Anyway, what does Wix allow?

I bought my own domain name for pretty cheap. My daughter who is a web designer recommended Tumblr for my blogging. I found it easy to use and, honestly, I struggle quite a lot with learning new technologies. She made me a website from scratch, using that HTML stuff I think, and then hooked up the Tumblr somehow. So I can make simple updates to my website by logging in through the Tumblr and I don't need to know HTML coding to do it.
