Oracle -- Susan Boulton

Well I certainly enjoyed it, and yes, Agatha Christie's Orient Express does come to mind now it's been mentioned. It was very different from anything I've read so far, in part because Clair/Oracle is such a fascinating character.

Personally I don't mind that not all threads were neatly tied up; I quite like being able to play around with the 'what if's' in my mind and think up my own endings to things left open. But I would definitely read more in Oracle's world if Sue were to write it!

So, I finished this today. I really enjoyed it and found it easier to keep up than I was anticipated. I liked the characters a lot especially Claire and Calvinward and warmed to Pugh very nicely. I wasn't just as sure of Mathew's actions and his change of character (as Hex mentioned earlier, I think) but that's a minor quibble.

Anyone on the fence about getting it- I'd reccommend it. A different setting than most fantasy, really well realised descriptions, and a cracking story.

(PS mods - should this be in Sue's forum? I struggled to find it... )

Thanks Jo,
Mathew's character is a difficult one. He begins as a wide-eyed evangelical innocent and by the end of the book his wings are fairly tarnished. It was a hard choice to leave him, and Emily in a sort of limbo, because their journey is just beginning. Perhaps if I do a sequel it would finish their journey, but I doubt it would be a happy one for either.
