Bristolcon 2015

In addition to having the honour of being on the same panel as the esteemed chopper... I'm running a kaffeeklatsch workshop on...

Real Technologies Futures Report and Discussion
This will comprise a report from a Future Technologies Convention that is being held literally the Thursday and Friday beforehand... so this is hot off the press info... followed by a discussion and/or exercise as to how apply such information to science fiction writing...

The numbers are limited and there usually is a sign-up sheet on the front desk... They may also arrange on-line sign-ups beforehand, but not sure on this.

Should I set up a thread for the Chrons on-line repeat, or will you?

;):)

Unfortunately, I (TBP) will have to drop out of going to this. So apologies to anyone wanting to catch up.

Regarding booking a place for my workshop: Real Technologies Futures Report and Discussion (at 12:00-12:45) and copied from the Bristolcon website:

Places are strictly limited to 10 people. If you would like to book a place, please email us at programme [at] bristolcon.org. Five places in each session will be available to book in advance, and five will be kept back for people to sign up at the convention. They will put a note up on page if pre-booking fills up.

I promise this is the last time I'll comment on my workshop... the description of it is up on the board... viz:

Real Technologies Futures Report and Discussion:

Robotics, artificial intelligence, smart materials, 3D-printing, wearables, internet of things, personalized medicine and more… all these technologies will soon become everyday items in our businesses, homes, cities and countryside, reshaping our lives. What will they mean to us? How can we help Joe Bloggs cope with this strange future only a few years away? Where can science fiction fit in?

A report of the Future Technology Summit in London will be given on the latest predictions. After a round table discussion on possible implications, there will be workshop on how to use these predictions to generate science fiction ideas and stories.

There are quite a few other interesting workshops that will help you with science fiction writing for different stages of the process. So it's well worth a look on the programme here:

Remember you can prebook a place at any of these workshops now by e-mailing programme [at] bristolcon.org . Looking forward to meeting up with all you who are able to come along.

I've booked my room, so all is set. :)

I hope to be there, but looking back at previous years, I've rarely booked this "early" (which perhaps explains why the room rates I've paid have been a lot lower than this year's "offers"...).
When I wrote this, the "offer" price was £122 (which probably included breakfast)! Later offers may have been lower ("may" because the "£109 with no breakfast" I saw may or may not have constituted a reduction in price).

Looking again today, I saw the same offer as I got last year: a room, breakfast, an evening meal with free wine (this year, as last year, it'll be diet cola for me) and free parking**, all for £99. :)

** - Overnight parking for hotel guests is another £10 this year. (Note, I don't think it was completely free last year, and don't expect it to be this year either.)

Family stuff the last two weeks might result in my cancelling at last minute, but as of today I am still going, hopefully....

It was, with Fantasycon in September. Not sure why they swapped about this year, but turn & turn about :)

Nobody has actually mentioned a date, other than not October.

Has/is it happened/happening/about to happen/TBA/NK/COD/S.W.A.L.K.?

.

Ah. Thanks. Never been to a convention and Bristol's not that far. Sadly I'm chained to a shop and I'd never get a parole hearing in time.

.

i know that feeling. advance planning helps me Live Better For Less ;)
Bristolcon also runs monthly "fringe" meetings where a couple of authors hold readings and there is beer. worth searching out to get you a taster :)

Well, no Bristolcon this year - my plans (involving Friday riding with my sister to Exeter, to my nephew's place, and taking the train from there, airBnB, the back to Colin's place in Reading and… ) were too complex, and fell apart.

So perhaps next year.
