What Are Your Thoughts on Comedy Shows Like The Simpson, Family Guy , American Dad and South Park?

Hi,

I don't mind the Simpsons, but I much preferred it's little bro Futurama. Family Guy and American Dad I don't find funny at all. But South Park is a gem. Sometimes it falls flat, but other times it's absolutely brilliant. I actually just watched an epp two nights ago where the school board wanted Cartman to not make fun of another kid in the school for ****ting his pants since previously it had resulted in a suicide - and he actually convinced them that the only solution was to make every kid in school do the same - so they gave them a pizza Friday with laxatives in the pizza's! I nearly wet myself laughing!!! It's got satire in it but mainly the show is complete madness and brilliant because of it.

Cheers, Greg.

I love to hate Eric Cartman and I like seeing him fall flat on his face. :)

The problem is, it's been 28 years of the same thing for the Simpsons and Southpark, over and over and over...

They both used to be fresh and inventive. But to continue that, you need new idea, new characters, different kinds of situations to put the characters in.

The Simpsons just didn't know when to die, Southpark doesn't know when to let someone stay dead.

Do you find these show them funny or not? Satire seem to be their stock and trade, How well do you think they do on that score ? Do you think people get the jokes or not ?

Do you find theses shows thought provoking?

I generally avoid sitcoms, for the most part. They're intellectual junk food - perfectly acceptable in small quantities, but consuming large amounts is like eating too many potato chips.

The Simpson wil be probably still be tv 20 years from now.

I’d say The Simpson’s started rolling downhill after S5, which was the best and anything after S10 is unwatchable.

FG and AD seem to have gotten better as they went on but I’ve grown out of them. Watching either feels like a defeat and an admission that I’m paying Netflix, Amazon and Virgin Media for nothing.

South Park is very hit and miss but when it hits, it makes my sides hurt. I like the Halloween episode with the band Korn parodying Scooby Doo

We need the shows and the satire they bring to. us. :)

I've gone through phases where i've enjoyed them all but i wouldn't call myself a fan. I enjoy the satire and i often find myself wondering how they get away with some of the things they air.

The family guy Star Wars parodies remain a favourite.

I absolutely love the Family Guy/ Star Wars parodies . They're laugh out loud funny . :D

I hope they do more and on the latest Star Wars films and tv series .:D

That would be very good and there is so much materiel to parody.

I'm rewatching the Simpsons, or some of it. I ignored S1 and almost all of S2, watched a few favourites from S3, and am now onto S4, where almost every episode is a classic. It's astonishing how consistently good it was in its heyday.

The Springfield Files Episode 10 of Season 8 is a glorious send up of the X Files and it even HadDavid Ducovny and Gillian Anderson as Mulder and Scully . :D

I personally find all 4 of the shows in the title to be poorly animated versions of Married with Children - crass to the pint of repeated boredom.

Peter Griffin never seem to learn from his mistakes no matter how catastrophic the outcome for himself, family snd friends . He absolutely doesn't think things through.

Hi,

Which is sort of the point of those shows. Homer and Peter are dumb. And maybe they'll learn a lesson somewhere along the way, but it won't stick. With Southpark though, the kids are who they are. They aren't particularly bright or stupid, they just are the adults they will become. Cartman will always be a self righteous, redneck, racist who will always assume the worst about others - particularly if they are of another race or gender. Stan will be the everyman. Kyle will be the moralising, bordering on smart kid who will give the sermon for the episode - sometimes wrongly. And Kenny - is Kenny! They aren't really there as characters for you to empathize with. They're mostly there as lenses to show you a world or a controversy through their - often confused - eyes.

Cheers, Greg.

If you've lived in the USA you will definitely find them funny - The early seasons of the Simpsons particularly so. :giggle: But a lot of it will wash over you if you aren't familiar with the cultural references. Brits can find American humour a bit heavy-handed, in that the writer/cartoonist feels he has to hit you several times in case you didn't get the joke right away. But not the Simpsons: it's sharp, fast, understated, and brilliantly observed.

Not so much thought-provoking as an excellent insight into American culture, characters and lifestyles.
