5.09 - The Dance of Dragon

TBH, it's purely marketing hyperbole. They are clearly exaggerating with the "break the internet" comment.

But... maybe. It's certainly possible it could be a spoiler for the book readers as well as something shocking for the non-reader audience. Although they have been hinting at the event I'm thinking of the entire season. And we have to remember, book readers are the minority audience of the show, who I suspect D&D weren't thinking about when they made that comment. So we have to see it from the average, non-reader viewers perspective and how they will react to what happens.

I also think people are reading too much into it. But only a few days to wait and we will find out. I may be wrong.

First Ranger Alliser Thorne took his sweet time before giving the order to open the tunnel gate and let the Wildlings enter. I was not at all sure he would go against his instincts, and apparently neither was Jon.

Thorne summed up the situation nicely when he told Jon he has a good heart which will get everyone killed. I'm guessing Thorne hasn't had any field experience against the White Walkers and their army of the dead. That might make him just a wee bit more welcoming toward the Wildling recruits.

Shireen's death was definitely shocking, and I could not/did not want, to believe it was actually happening. That said, it is by no means a new idea, just look at Greek mythology: Agamemnon sacrifices his eldest daughter, Iphigenia, on his seers's declaration that that is the only way to secure safe passage for his soldiers across the sea, on their way to fight Troy. His wife later avenges their daughter by killing him...

Now to suggest fanatical Selyse would turn and choose family over religion seems a long shot, especially knowing how she felt about Shireen, but I wonder if her character will be changed after this, or will she remain as she is #Sansastyle (I had high hopes, which were predictably dashed, still, disappointment is bitter).

Oh yeah, that's another out of character moment I forgot to mention... I don't think D&D really understood the motivations and feelings of the characters involved when they planned out the script. They certainly butchered all their characters.

I noticed GRRM didn't write an episode this season.

Arya's quick abandonment of her assassination assignment to stalk the far more tempting personal target of Ser Meryn does not bode well for staying in the good graces of the Many-Faced God.

The Thin Man wasn't hungry? Please! Jaqen didn't buy that for an instant.

Didn't Arya read the fine print in her training contract? She must have missed the “no substitutions” clause.

The sacrifice of Shireen, shocking!
The death of Dany's fiancé, thank goodness!

My hopes for Sunday
Dany finally releases the other two dragons
Sansa will be rescued

My questions
Who is the guy Arya is so interested in? Is he on her night time name list? Please don't tell me she's not going to do what I think she might, just so she can get close enough for the kill. If that's her intention.

We've met him before. It's Meryn Trant, one of the names on her list. He's the guy that she believes killed her "Dancing Instructor" way back in season 1.

He's also the guy that beat Sansa at Joffrey's command, although Arya doesn't know about that.

Personally, I'd be glad to see Arya get her revenge.

I was surprised by the sudden display of fangs from the seemingly benign and peaceful Prince Doran Martell.

The prince certainly knocked the rebellion out of Ellaria. I don't recall Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi ever being quite that scary when he was the well-mannered Dr. Bashir.

With Jaime, Bronn, Myrcella and her fiance getting their passports stamped to leave Dorne, I am expecting the focus of the season finale to shift to King's Landing. Jaime has no idea that Cersei is cooling her royal heels in a dungeon cell and why.

It's my understanding that it takes at least two to commit an act of incest. The High Sparrow would probably like to have few words with Jaime upon his arrival. He may have a Faith Militant squad on hand to escort him to an audience.

Maybe the final anticipated shocking moments of the season will feature a trial and double death sentence for the House of Lannister.

Early in the season I read that Lena Headey had used a body double for a particular scene this season. I think we might be seeing that very scene in E10. Book readers will know what scene that is.

Clearly the "break the internet" thing is hype, but I'm sure they'll do something unexpected, just to keep book readers on their toes. ;)

Oh, I hadn't heard about the body double and was wondering about how they would handle that...
