Guys, there was this really cool novel(an omnibus of 5 books I think) called the dark is Rising by Susan Greenwood or something. anybody ever read and what did you think about the whole "Old ones versus the agents of the Dark"? And any opinions on the Bruckheimer version of King Arthur(pity I cant use one of thumbs down icons in here)!

Yes, I've read the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. I admired it greatly and am sure it's had some influence on my own writing.

There was, I think, some discussion of the books in the Young Adult thread.

I believe it was a very minor discussion.

Just to add to Kelpie's comments.
There are five books in the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper including:
Over Sea, Under Stone
The Dark is Rising - Winner of the 1974 Newbery Award
Greenwitch
The Grey King - Winner of the 1976 Newbery Award
and Silver on The Tree

I never saw these books as a young kid and when I did try and go back and read them as an adult, I couldn't get into the stories. I couldn't tell you why, I just wasn't interested in the characters I guess.

I always enjoyed it. I freely admit that. In fact i reread them a few days back... Will and Bran... mmm

Aha the NEW Oracle cometh....;)
I've heard of susan Cooper and this series but I've never read them.
They sound like they may be a good read, another to add to the "to read" list *sighs*

"Oracle", I like that Gollum! But I think not...;)
These books are very short and easy. It's a good break from all those heavy reads us 'adults' are into.
I suggest them! But I'm also a kid fantasy fan too! ;)

Amber, it takes a variety of different people to make the world go 'round... and the same can be applied to this forum... and concerning books.
I was actually recommended to read these books by a book seller who I was talking to about Robin McKinley and J K Rowling... Besides, there might be something to this series considering that 2 of the 5 books are Newbery Awarders.
There's no need to worry when some one enjoys a children's book, it just means we understand the simple things in life. ;)

DiR slash ? Where did you hear about that, Amber?

(Finding it worrying, too.)

Hey I don't mind slash lol ^^ It does worry me though that they are writing about *11* year olds. I found it on FF.Net

Yes, the age factor is what I was reacting to.

I don't read slash myself. Somehow, I prefer my favorite characters' ... um, relationships ... to remain pretty much as their creators originally intended.

Particularly, of course, when those characters are eleven years old.

Whoops, I'm so embarrased! Merriman Lyon was so cool And that whole incident at that Lady's(I'm afraid as good as it was, it was such a long tym ago and I'm getting hazy) manor during the storm when will finally found the fire thingy(talisman or something), I FELT that! If it wasn't for that book I would have gotten 15 points at A-level instead of 13 but hey, it was good enuff. Could it make a (good) movie? And no-one's answering me about the King Arthur flick that totally sucked.

I think The Dark is Rising would make a wonderful movie, if done right. If they could do justice to some of Cooper's more magical moments.

Can't comment on the King Arthur movie -- I passed on that one, because it didn't look like an interpretation I would enjoy.

Wish you'd been there to pass on some of your sceptisism of the movie to me. Trust me its well placed. Does she have any other fantasy novels?

HMM.. I qiute liked the recent King Arthur movie although I didn't view it from an historically accurate perspective or anything along those lines BUT just as a story and as a piece of entertainment per se...:D
