Signed Books

Back in 2009 I went to a book signing George R.R. Martin was doing in Belfast. Ostensibly it was to promote his Jack Vance tribute anthology but he was also visiting the set of the (original never-aired) pilot for A Game of Thrones. He brought a few of the actors from the pilot along to the signing, at the time nobody really knew who most of them were but they were happy to be asked to sign some copies of A Game of Thrones. In retrospect I wish I'd had some nice hardback edition but I'm still quite happy with my paperback signed by GRRM, Richard Madden, Kit Harrington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Alfie Allen and Ron Donnachie.

I do have quite a few other signed books from various conventions and events in bookshops. One of my favourites is Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell which I got signed at an event for various SF/Fantasy authors in a Cambridge bookshop, it felt quite fortunate because she got added to the line-up at the last minute.
That was in the old Easons in Donegal Place I think - it was a fun signing session :)

I probably have a lot but never pay to much attention to them.

What I can remember is (and not all Sci-fi etc).
Chris Bunch - Corsair.
Michael Moorcock - Byzantium Endures.
John Wyndham - ?
Neil Gaiman - Quite a few/
Murray Walker and a lot of Formula 1 Drivers in their autobiographies.

I remember we were asked why there were a few dozen people queuing up by some of the bookshop's regular customers. When we explained we were there for George R.R. Martin they hadn't heard of him, not too surprising at the time but I suspect he might be a lot better known in Belfast nowadays.

A few random accidental pickups.

A couple of paperbacks in the Book of the New Sun series picked up off the shelf from Andromeda books in the 1980 s. Only found they were signed by Gene Wolfe when I read them. Multiple rereads and moves later they are very battered.

I have a childhood friend, now a successful journalist, who puts out a fairly chunky book about once a year. My parents invariably get him to inscribe a hardback copy which ends up in my Christmas stocking. They clearly think he is still an impoverished trainee reporter for the Brighton Evening Argus. Mildly embarrassing when I occasionally catch up with him myself.

I have a copy of Legend: A Graphic Novel by David Gemmel. Signed by him, Stan Nicholls and Fangorn
And a Martha Washington compendium thame with a postcard signed by Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons

I thought i'd bump this.

After reading Surface Detail, i thought it's be nice to go back and collect his books in First Edition. Looking on Ebay there are a lot of signed 1st editions there for the taking, but many of them are dedicated to someone. Personally, I won't get them as it seems like i'm taking something very personal. What are your views on this?

If you change your name by deed poll to match that of the dedicatee, you should be alright.

I'd be very wary of any 'signed' editions on ebay dedication or no. If I was the spend the money on a signed first edition I think I'd rather deal with a reputable book dealer. As for the book being personalised, I know I wouldn't buy one.

A lot of reputable book dealers run eBay stores. I just always check the seller out well :)

I worked for a decade in a chain store in a large metro area. I would have 2-3 signings a week. I collected a lot of books that I wouldn't normally collect just because of the opportunity. Robin Cook was local author and he would do a signing as each new book came out and I would get him to sign older copies as well. I gifted my mother in law a complete set of his books, signed to her. I have a box of books that I would trade for what I wanted. I would contact other stores in the chain that would have Iain M. Banks or China Mieville signing and arrange a trade of a signed Jimmy Carter title for a signed Perdido Street Station or a Bill Russell signed book for a Ray Bradbury. I kept my signed copies of a few titles outside my normal genre such as Angela's Ashes, The Sorcerer's Stone, Bunnicula, Moon ( signed by Buzz Aldrin).
