Hodderscape Open Submission Window

Hi all,

This may have already been noted and it could possibly be in the wrong section but the fantasy wing of Hodder and Stoughton have an open submission until the 16th of August.

Having just done the 2nd edit of my latest, I am prematurely going to enter it, expect a synopsis in critiques aaargh! All thoughts, ideas and criticisms accepted on what feels like a nightmare.

Severe headache. Only got 1/2 way on first Synopsis 1st draft :( Unusual for me to do so little writing in a day ... Still the evening is young.

Oh dear... sympathies on headache... all I can say is...

Patience is a virtue. Virtue is a Grace. And Grace is a little girl who didn't wash her face....

Heavens above, where do I pick this doggerel up from? But hope it made you laugh!

I've merged your thread with an existing thread in Publishing, and moved the whole thing to GWD, where I think it will be more easily noticed.

Argh, so annoying seeing open windows when I'm not even close to submission... although interesting note in the comments Anne says the manuscript doesn't need to be finished. (that's a first!) But I won't risk that since I'm still playing around with things and might end up changing large parts of the story once again, never know!

Warren, I was greatly surprised by that.

I do think it's a good move, though. The odds on someone having a book basically done, in the right genre, of the right size, in a given two week period must be pretty damned long [even more so when self-publishing means they might already be well down that route].

I just received from last week (6th) submission.

Hello!

This email is to confirm that we have received and logged your submission.

Due to the high number of submissions we have received it will take some time for our team to read and review everything, so please be patient. We hope to let you know our decision by the end of September.

Thanks,

The Hodderscape Team

My editor asked me to submit, so I did, but I'm afraid I'm on same line with Jo. I cannot wait another year for them to slap me with a form rejection.

End of September's not bad... if they stick to it!

Zeno didn't even bother sending a received email conformation.

This is what I wrote in the cover letter in case anyone's having a problem forming their own one.

Dear Anne Perry and Hodderscape team,

Having heard about your competition through my editor, I am pleased to submit for consideration, 'First Interview'; a stand-alone pilot novel for the Necromorphosis Trilogy that I have been crafting for the past few years.

The books begins: "On the eve of the Great Panic, Mi5's Senior Intelligence Analyst, Herbert Jackson, sits down to interview an impossible creature, a six and half centuries old vampire called, Lady Jane McGriffin. She shouldn't exist, yet, she's sitting in front of him, telling him her tale of surviving the days leading up-to the world-wide zombie apocalypse that set the elite packing their bags to leave Earth."

Although I've classified the book as Dark Urban Fantasy it mixes other genres through a character driven story that begins where it ends, leaving reader wanting more. I've also intentionally weakened Herbert in order to finish Jane's tale about how she faced the apocalypse.

As a writer I've been practising my art a little under ten years, and I feel through the feedback from various sources that the, 'First Interview', should see daylight regardless and I am looking into self publishing, if all else fails. However, I would of course prefer to find a publisher who loves the book as much my beta readers do.

I thank you for your time and consideration and, I look forward hearing from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

The confirmation e-mail's a good idea. I hope they can keep to the end of September target (it'll be impressive if they can).

And if it's useful, this was my covering letter. Although, unfortunately, I put it in the body of the email instead of an attachment, so suspect I'm doomed.

Good luck, all!

The Waters and The Wild - Fantasy - 60,000 words.

Amy's heard voices all her life. Either she's mad, or they really are the fairies. When the voices turn dangerous, threatening those she loves, she has to find the truth that lies behind them: Amy might not be human and, if she is, it may not be her who's mad.

The Waters and the Wild is my third book. My debut, the first of a trilogy, (Abendau's Heir) was released by Tickety Boo Press this year. My second (Inish Carraig) is being released later this month. I am currently unagented, but have been represented in the past by the Bent Agency.

mine's in the body too - all they actually asked for on the guidelines was contact details on the attachments, so we'll see...

I'm a bit wary about how small this press is. But i suppose there is no harm in submitting I may give it a go. Good luck to all who have sent.

While the dodo is extinct. Hodder's Dodo goes from strength to strength, they've gone so far as to design a dodo logo (??) for all the sub-genres. They have posted an update. They are hand logging the subs and sending out "recieved" replies as per ctg's post above - so someone personally entered your MS onto a database somewhere for tracking purposes. :D
Good luck to all who have tossed in their coins!

Seeing all these wonderful posts, I've got the the stage in the submission cycle of: 'any sub I put in doesn't have a chance against all these - there are bound to be some extremely good ones amongst them that will be picked up. So why bother making the effort'.

Good luck to those who have / are / will sub/-bed/-bing .... why is english so complicated?
