It's September - what are you reading?

The Boys from Brazil by Ira Levin. Not bad so far, although I can't work out whether it's a dark thriller or rather tacky pulp.

After getting to 3/4 of the way through I've put Stuka Pilot to one side for the time being (it is interesting but the writing style, typos and speeling [sic] if doing my head in)... will have a browse what to try next

I'm making my way thorough The Long Way to a small, angry planet. I thought I'd love it and, whilst it's passing the time okay, I'm disappointed. I'll do a fuller review at the end but, I think, it's the lack of tension in the story arc that's not working for me. The characters are likeable, and there are plenty of good scenes, but it feels like a series of fun scenes stuck together, rather than a story with impetus and something behind the action. I'll try to clarify my thinking more and get something down, because there is much to like it's just, not quite, there for me.

I'm over halfway through The Martian, and I actually don't feel bogged down by the technical talk at all. The character is actually quite amusing and I think Weir did a great job.

Just finished Days of Rage by Brad Taylor. Enjoyed it.

Just started a thriller called Pinnacle Event by Richard A. Clarke, about the search for 5 nukes in 5 cities just before the 2016 presidential election.

The kids I tutor and I have started new books for their class reading:
  • The younger class is reading TIME RIDERS by Alex Scarrow.
  • The older class is reading THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas.
Making geeks out of them while improving their English reading, comprehension, and discussion skills - what's not to like?

Onto volume II (of IV) of Three Kingdoms. Trying to imagine what it would be like writing something of that size.

I suspect The Stormlight Archives will end up with a bigger word count, but the cast list of Three Kingdoms could be a book in itself.

5 stories into the GRR Martin/Dozois comp Rogues and loved every tale so far, cheap in Tesco and felt the need for some short stories, even enjoyed the Abercrombie submission!

finished with the brothers cabal and now to call to battle

About to start The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith as "Claire Morgan" (1952). This is the famous suspense writer's lesbian romance novel, later republished under her own name and the title Carol. (Under that title, a film adaptation is soon to be released.) My edition is a 2015 reprint of the 1952 edition (without the author's afterword which appeared in later editions.)

My reading time dried up this month so I only just finished Nyctophobia by Christopher Fowler. It's a well-written haunted house story with a progression and late revelations that seem to me to be in conversation with Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House while totally distinct from that novel. This is the second book I've read by Fowler, the other being Hell Train and I found I really liked how he wove historical fact into these novels, World War I in Hell Train and the Spanish Civil War into Nyctophobia.

I finished The Martian and really liked it. Great read.

Not sure where to go from here. Might do Constitution by Webb. I have a long TBR on the kindle.

Just finished Pinnacle Event by Richard A. Clarke. Good thriller.

Just started Vulcan's Forge by Jack Du Brul. It's a thriller about a volcano erupting in Hawaii. Reminds me of Cussler's novels.

i tried that by jack but didn't conect with me. :) now Reading Scrapyard Ship : Star Watch

So I am reading Constitution by Nick Webb, and I'm eating it up. Really fun book. This one won't take me long.

I was trying to read The Martian but I wasn't getting into it, really didn't like the narrative voice. So I've put it to one side for the moment and I'm now reading A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. So far it's wonderful.
