Doctor Who losing audience?

I agree with Brian - I actually liked Colemans earlier Who stuff but they should have killed her off with Smith. I always preferred Amy Pond.

Sacrifices without sacrifices are kind of, well, erm... not really sacrifices?

Now I get that it all comes down to Missy "giving" Clara to the doctor and whatever long arc that entails but I think the show is past its peak now. Matt Smiths Big Bang series with the Pandorica was IMO far and ahead of any Capaldi stuff.

Right now Clara is the only reason I have stuck with watching the show. Matt Smith was my favorite Doctor and unlike most of the other posters here I am not sold on Capaldi as the Doctor at all. As of now my guess is that this may be my last season of watching Dr. Who.

On the plus side I am hooked on Orphan Black. Tatiana Maslany may be the best actress on television. Watching Helena get the refund was Game of Thrones worthy television.

The Doctor Who ratings were up significantly from the season opener with "Under the Lake." I hope the trend continues.

Ratings should get another boost next week with Maisie Williams as a guest star AND Vikings!

If I don't hear at least one hearty rendition of "Spam, Spam, Spam," I'm going to be very disappointed. Bloody Vikings.

Same here. Except that I haven't even bothered to watch the current season as yet.

I just never warmed to Capaldi at all. Clara's fine but Capaldi's performance has been - to me at least - not very Doctor-y.

I miss 10 and 11.

Oh, you should definitely give the new series a try. Capaldi has the lead and a new manic personality (not to mention sonic sunglasses), thanks to the writers. The difference between last season and this one is truly like night and day.

I really hope these ratings are enough to deter these rumours from actually happening.

Have they really not killed her off yet? I kind of liked Capaldi's Doctor, but I just couldn't take another second of Clara. I was thinking of watching some of the episodes I missed now they're on Netflix, but not if she's still in them.

I actually dislike her more than River Song, which is quite amazing considering how much she ruined earlier series.

No, she is kinda sorta dead. I think she's been written out of Who completely now, so it's probably safe for you to return.

*sigh*

Dr. Who is starting to remind me of why I stopped reading comics, when I caught myself using the phrase "Batman's dead at the moment."

Sounds like the perfect message for my voicemail. "Hi. I can't answer your call right now because I'm somewhat dead. Please try again later.":D

Doesn't surprise me. I know people who quit the show completely after last year. In my opinion their low point was the idiotic episode where the moon is an egg. I stopped watching for a while after that myself. Sleep No More was another ridiculous one. They need to get some decent writers on board.

Sleep No More was where I drew the line.

It just seemed so ridiculous but yeah the Moon is an Egg started me down the road of not caring anymore.

IMO Matt Smiths DW was better in almost every way.

I don't think the general audience is losing faith, or starting to have gone off DW, I think the problem is, since the Moff took over, the BBC have been playing silly sods with the Scheduling, attempting to chase ratings, and the show has constantly shifted around between 6pm and 9pm, rather than remaining in a fixed slot.

Being scheduled for Autumn was a much better idea, especially since DW was losing ratings at least on the night because long summertime nights had kids out playing and people enjoying the weather in their gardens and so on. I reckon it should be fixed for either 7pm or 7:30pm and not shift from that.

I love Capaldi as the Doctor, but his S1 really tried my patience, with the Moff continually writing him as bit of a ******* with not much redeeming, not he has settled down as a typical Doctor, but with a bit of a darker side, he is much better.

The reason the darker moments worked so well for Smith is most of the time his Doctor was very much the madman in a box, when he went dark or angry it was a shocking shift. Mind, I could see Capaldi doing the "Face of the Devil himself" scene with a crashed Dalek very well, but couldn't really see Tenants.

I actually really liked the scripting in Capaldis seasons and I think it was a return to form after a weak end to Matt Smiths tenure. Capaldi is very good as well I think although I wasn't a huge fan of Clara but I understand that there are going to be regulars I don't think are good and I look forward to the next one.

Also these things go in cycles in Tennants time Doctor Who was one of the biggest things on British television but had little presence overseas. Nowadays Britain has become a bit ambivilent whilst the overseas audience is truly massive in a way it never has been before.

Also I always encourage people not to abandon the show if they don't like the current iteration. As the writer and setting change every week and the leads change every couple of years so I plead with people that they may find themselves enjoying the next season or even the next story.

They could always bring back Rose Tyler.:)

I'd prefer Donna. Rose and Donna were both great companions because they always had such a good chemistry with Tenth, but out of two, I think Donna would have a better chemistry with Twelfth. Much of Rose's chemistry was the romance aspect and she has her happily ever after in that regard with Tenth.

Then again, even though I cried about Donna's fate about as much as I cried when Tenth died, I think that her ending was probably the strongest ending of all revival series companions. It was just so heartbreaking. Therefore, my soft spot for Donna and the potentially great chemistry with Twelfth aside, it might just be best to leave her alone as well much like Rose.

I've stuck with the show, because of how much I used to love it, so i am hoping for improvements. With most people, I think the plotlines have been rubbish, and although love Jenna Coleman as an actress (she's currently awesome in Victoria!) I haven't liked her since they chucked her into Matt Smith's time stream and made her the reason he accomplished everything in his life. Danny stuff was rubbish too, and a female master is just weird. I also was not sold on Capaldi as the Doctor, but then I started watching with Christopher Eccleston so didn't watch the series when the Doctor was an old man, and I like my Doctor's fanciable! I do think Capaldi has improved in his second series, and I did like the whole electric guitar/sunglasses thing. Also the immortal viking girl annoyed me a lot! I think the writing needs some serious addressing - I though Matt Smith deserved a better send off episode than he got.
