October 2015: What are you reading?

I finished Stephen Moss' Fear the Sky. It was quite a thrilling SF invasion story. It had a spy thriller feel to it which was cool.

I'm not sure what to read next, I have so many options. I do know I will start something later today

It's just it's hard not to compare the alternate setting with the real one, and the contrast is pretty sharp, since Dick portrays the Japanese as low-tech, at least as compared to the Nazis, while if you look at modern day Tokyo you'd be hard pressed to say that they've fallen behind technologically. Of course, different circumstances breed different results, but on that page I find it implausible. I like the interplay between the I Ching and reality, but again, the I Ching is a Chinese classic. As far as I know, imperial Japan didn't hold Chinese culture in high regard and it would be unlikely that if they conquered China they would adopt a classic Chinese text as a book to guide them through life. Anyway, I guess I'm focusing a bit too much on the trees and too little on the forest, but alternate histories in general are not my thing - this was just a friend's high recommendation. I will have a looksee at Fatherland, though, since it seems to have some murder and I loves me some murder in my sci-fi :D
never did liked alternate history books. read a few of them and honestly they all seem from a bit to a lot far fetched. especiallly if you give them anacronistic inventions or something in that line.

Finished Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld. First in a series of YA novels. It's about a group of young people with special powers. Think of the TV show Heroes, but not as good.

Started and about to finish Robert Ludlum's The Geneva Strategy by Jamie Freveletti.
you can never go wrong with a Ludlum lol finished bennett: a federation forged in fire. man, i love the kobani's series.... then 54 of alex archer series. and now into AL:ICE

and how did i forget about hell's foundation quiver by david weber

Finished Robert Ludlum's The Geneva Strategy by Jamie Freveletti. Started Overlord by David L. Golemon.

great series. i read the mountain which is kind of a finishing arc for the series but i'm hoping for new books soon. iof anyones interest david weber going to put out a new honor harrigton but only next year in the summer. there's no new date for a new safehold book and the empire of man new book seems to be a lit late also. :)

So I started Richard Fox's The Ember War. I am really liking it so far. A lot of fun in an 'aliens are coming in sixty years' book. I'm loving this new generation of SF coming out these days.

I remember reading one of Golemon's books and remember liking it, but I thought it was poorly edited. I noticed a bunch of similar comments on his other books at amazon. Should I give the series another go or are all of them chock full of errors?

For what this is worth, Wikipedia says the next Safehold novel is due sometime this month. No word on the next Empire of Man novel.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll give it another shot. By the by, you've probably tried James Rollins if you're reading Golemon, but, if you haven't, you definitely should. A personal favorite of mine - Amazonia.

i like amazonia a lot. it was the first one of him that i read :) did you try ICE HUNT? and if you want other series or authors that are Worth check my posts. i have lists... oh do I have list lol....

Finished Wooding's Ace of Skulls. It definitely lived up to my expectations. Sometimes a bit cheesy, but the action is top notch, the pacing is excellent, and the characters, even if they're Dragonlance-Chronicles style archetypes, are easy to like and root for. Apparently, this is the end of the series, and I couldn't be more satisfied. Might even go through this series again someday!

Now, on to the highly recommended Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. My brother said it was a blast, and I love a good puzzle/mystery, so I'm looking forward to this one.

I really like Tales of the Ketty Jay as well. They're good old-fashioned rollicking adventures.

Love your lists!

Quickly read the political cartoon collection Too Much Crazy by Tom Tomorrow.

Will continue the humor theme with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents: Earth (the Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race.

I believe I haven't read that one yet. I'm sure I have it lying somewhere around the house, since I got hold of pretty much all of his non-Sigmas on a 3$/book bargain. I guess I'll put it on the next-up pile.

i liked ready player one a lot.. is going to be a movie if i'm not mistaken. Contrary to some i quite enjoyed Armada also

Just finished Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta - first fantasy book I'd read in ages and I enjoyed it a lot. Now onto the sequal/next in the series.

I've also just ordered the first book in the Captive Prince series and I'm WELL excited about it although I feel like that's kind of a niche genre on here ;) (kind of fantasy erotica I believe?)
