_______________________________________________________________________________________

It is possible that I have made some errors, so if something doesn't look right ("I didn't write that!" or "Where's the story I sent you?") let me know.

Many thanks for joining in.

I will now try to actually read the stories I was sent and offer some comments when I can.

It's up to the individual authors as to whether they wish to share their stories here as links, or reserve them for future publication.

Ha! I KNEW Kerry wouldn't let me go without a story. It was great! Thanks.

And a massive roundapplause for Victoria for her tireless efforts. Whenever she runs the SS it does seem to be so much smoother.

Now for a moan; it seems that with each successive SS les and less of us are getting involved in the actual guesswork of who wrote what. For the custodian, receiving, sending and posting the story excerpts is quite a task - none of us are mods here - so I think it's a great shame that out of so many stories only a few people tried to guess. We can do better than this :D

Okay. I'm off my soapbox now. Thanks to everyone who made this SS so good (and tough!). And now I must go and put my Kill-Vaz disguise on for setting me such a hard stimulus. The first story I started was pure X-Files and so after about 4K I scrapped it and vowed to wreak havoc-ful vengeance on him ;)

I should like to point out I knew Resvrgam was penned by Dan as he asked me to to beta it for him. I chose to red-herring it in my guess list which means I totally win and am the king of guessing and fabsterliciousness as that would bring me 5 guesses correct.

So yeah, there's that ;)

Thank you Victoria! You did a great job hosting us.

Thank you to Twistedlemon who wrote Ghost Games for my monster on an island request. I enjoyed it!

I must say it took me a while to think of something for forensic demonology but once I got going I had a lot of fun writing it.

And Phyre guessed me correct that sneaky guy

The request:

David Evil Overlord: I think I'd like a story with a very non-human race (crustaceans, perhaps?), with a blend of technology and magic.

The story: "The Auryns" by The Storyteller

This was an extremely imaginative tale with several non-human characters who were fully developed individuals. The author chose the very difficult path of making the actions of humans, which play a vital role in the story, entirely offstage. Through this method of distancing, as well as by making the reader empathize with non-human characters, we are drawn into a world which is very different from our own. Yet, thanks to vivid descriptions and a gift for consistent details, it seems completely real. In addition to this, the author managed to tell two suspenseful stories at once, through the device of multiple flashbacks. In this way, we are given everything we need to know about the background and origin of this strange new world, while avoiding the clumsy exposition found in far too many works of fiction.

 Oops! I apologize! I was working on my own deductions (I had an extensive list of deductions based on the clues and previous guesses) and was planning on reading the stories and submitting my guess, but I clearly took far too long on that! I agree Phyrebrat, after so much work on Victoria's part it is good to take the time to submit a guess. Sorry that I dropped the ball on that one! :(

Secondly, thank you J Riff for my own story! I was between you and DDJ as my guess for the writer! I hope it wasn't too silly of a request :p

My story was written for David Evil Overlord (Hope you enjoyed it!!!) and people are welcome to read it! (Do I just include a link to it on this thread or is there some preferred method? Or is it the choice of the receiver whether they want to share the story they received?)

And lastly, thank you so much Victoria for a very flattering review! That is very high praise, and since I felt like I rushed the end product I was worried that overall it might have been lacking. More than that, thank you for all the hard work you have done making this event(?) run smoothly. I can't imagine how much work it must have been, but it is much appreciated!

I enjoyed being a part of this, and I look forward to reading more of the stories! (And possibly giving it another stab next year. ;))

Here's mine, if anyone would like to read it. It's around 1500 words.

Can't see anything I do as being publishable, so I can put these for open perusal. When people start generating requests, before they are all prepared, I start organising writing, laying out concepts, even writing lumps - I know how slow a typist I am. Then, when the actual distribution of rôles begins, I am ready - and it is one I've not even thought about that I am issued. Which is why Kerry got an extra - it was too close to being ready to file under junk. Actually, there's a catastrophe close to completion - that might even have been useful. Perhaps I will.

First, I really enjoy this challenge. It forces me to really stretch myself. Thanks, Victoria, for doing an excellent job coordinating this challenge. The guessing part is always fun, too, especially seeing which stories are attributed to you and who gets guessed for your story.

Second, thanks, Dusty, for the story fragment. It's very intriguing and I hope to get a chance to read the finished story someday (though I understand if it doesn't happen).

Third, thanks, Kerry, for the kind words about my story "In the Hot Mists" (back when you didn't know it was mine). This was the first time I ever attempted steampunk, so I was glad to have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. I think the story has some promise, so I'll withhold posting it. I may post part of it in the Critiques section. I've never posted in the Critiques, but I've always wanted to try it out. I know my story didn't have enough Victorian atmosphere, which is where it needs the most work. Also I'm not sure if it is "steampunkish" enough.

Ok, here are my guesses:

"The Auryns" - The Storyteller
"Ghost Games" - Twistedlemon
"The Immortals" - Phyrebrat
"In the Hot Mists" - johnnyjet
"Laura and the Manxome Foe" - Robert Mackay
"May the Farce be With You" - David Evil Overlord
"One Thousand and One Meals" - holland
"Resvrgam" - DG Jones
"Slim Pickings" - Vaz
"Steamspace" - chrispenycate
"The Sting" - Kerrybuchanan
"Three Words" - ratsy
"Welcome In, Humans" - chrispenycate
[untitled # 1] - TheDustyZebra
"Fairy Fun" - J Riff
[untitled # 2] - Kerrybuchanan

Sadly, my story "Resvrgam" did not get read, as my recipient (Jastius) seems to have been AWOL since July, though I am very grateful to @Phyrebrat who graciously agreed to do a beta read for it (and didn't even use his inside knowledge to cheat on the guessing - what a noble brat). So if anyone fancies a read of it then here it is! I'm sure I'll find a home for it at some point or other.

Lastly, thanks to Victoria for hosting us and getting us to write lots of lovely new stuff. I've only read the snippets so far, but I look forward to reading some of the full stories over the next few days.

The request:

ratsy: I would like a horror story set on a small island in the middle of the ocean.

The story: "Ghost Games" by Twistedlemon

By making use of the effective technique of beginning this tale of terror in the familiar modern world of technology and electronic celebrity, the author draws the reader in like a spider enticing its prey. Before we know it we are confronted with creatures from our worst nightmares. By assembling a large cast of quickly but effectively delineated characters, a great deal of suspense is created without slowing down the pace of the story. As the horrors begin, the reader is in a state of anxiety about who will fall victim to them and who will survive. Wisely, the author delays the full back story for these events until after we have seen their effects. By offering a partial explanation through the words of a memorable character, the exposition becomes as entertaining as the narrative events.
