Mass plagiarist caught red-handed

Sour Ron deserves its own thread.

I thought that sour Ron was Ronald Reagan after talking to the Russians?

Bored of the Rings even managed to get something like the above published...

I have higher hopes of my story of a redneck yokel, who finding himself stranded on a desert planet becomes a messiah to its people and takes over the universe. It's called Duane

Just as well** you mentioned the colour of his neck, so that we know he isn't a thinly disguised Duane Dibbley (meaning that you should avoid the attentions Doug Naylor, or whoever else owns the rights to that character).

** - On the other hand, an epic in which Duane Dibbley becomes a messiah and takes over the universe would be one hell of a book/series.

Sadly, this isn't the first time I've come across stories like this. I remember a few years ago there was a case of a woman writing dreadful books with names similar enough to real books to cause confusion.

However that's just nasty or dubious marketing. Sometimes not even deliberate. Not plagiarism. Oddly there isn't even copyright on titles.
Not a problem if the book is in a totally different market and genre.
e.g. Dancer's Luck
SF title for adults
Ballet school story for kids

Magician Fantasy on imaginary Mediaeval world.
The Magician Y.A. contemporary Earth fantasy.
Less similar title: The Magician's Guild

I don't think anyone would confuse these.
There are actually quite a few fantasy titles with slightly similar titles which I don't think were deliberate attempts to deceive.

The people behind Bored of the Rings also did a book called Doon.

It isn't limited to fiction. The right wing "historian" Stephen Ambrose probably didn't wind up in court only because he died before the most egregious instances of his habitual plagiarism, lying and invention were exposed. And the left wing "historian" Doris Goodwin only avoided court, at least so far, by an undisclosed out of court settlement with one of the victims of her routine thieving. The amazing thing is that both people are still widely respected.

What a total tool, if you havent got the time or patience to work on your own original pieces you should surely think about another career no?

And what made them think they wouldnt be caught?

Would have been hilarious if both projects ended up on the shelves next to each other!

Lew the thing is most people are not that interested in authors; just what they write. Also a lot of things like this don't hit the main media channels so people are never aware of them. Most might search their favoured authors on amazon to see if there are new books; but many will just totally miss the drama that happens

True. I shouldn't be amazed. God, but that's bitter, but you're right. I don't know about Goodman, but Ambrose made a mint, because TV people (do we call TV people "Hollywood" or is that just for movie makers?) loved him. While much better historians remained relatively unknown by the masses. I'm gonna take up cussin' in Interworld - TANJ!

Hi,

Personally I loved this line by the plagarist:

"Responding to the Guardian in a statement, Harner said she realised she had “made mistakes”. “I own them, and I will deal with the consequences. In transforming two M/F romance stories into an M/M genre, it appears that I may have crossed the line and violated my own code of ethics,” she wrote."

I'm just stunned and have to ask - what is outside her own code of ethics?

Cheers, Greg.

She sounds like a politician. If any working class person fiddles the benefits system, they're a criminal. If an MP fiddles expenses, they've made an error of judgement. It's no 'mistake' to lift passages written by other writers, it's criminal. She should 'own' that fact and cut the bullcrap.

"...Harner said she realised she had “made mistakes. I own them...."
I'm pretty sure the things that, together, make up plagiarism existed long before Harner decided to indulge in them, so I think it's pretty clear that she doesn't own them at all.

So no change there, then.... ;):)
