Variety: is or are?

To get back to the OP

There is an extensive variety of activities.
I would ditch the an
But it could be ambivalent
We could be talking...
There is variety.
or
There are activities.

But if I were to use are I'd go with...

There are extensive varieties of activities.

Even though it comes close to changing the meaning it pushes the dissonance of the ambiguity further away.(The ambiguity is still there.)
