Over in Kate Elliott's website, she too has a discussion board, and they (those people who post over there) are coming very close to figuring out who Alain is... :)
Alain is the only part of the story that still naggs me to this day. And because I love a good discussion and none of us knows (except for Kate herself and she is making us wait) know who Alain is, I thought this would be a good thread.
So, what are all of your thoughts on who he is?
Diamone?
Angel?
God?
Child of a Saint? Which Saint if you think this.
or Other?

Thought of putting this thread as a poll, but I wanted this to be an ideas thread, more things to hash out and I think a poll is too restricting concerning this matter.

Anyways...
Your thoughts?

Whoever Alain turns out to be, it had better be something darn good -- to make up for all he's suffered along the way.

I agree! The poor man has suffered all through the whole story and the worse was at the end of book 5. I have to say, I'm glad that Kate put the first chapter of book 6 on line showing us that Alain was being taken care of. (is that the mother in me coming out?) :0

My theory is that he is the one person who can bring peace between the humans and the Eika (SP?) You may call that ambassador but personally I would put a higher meaning or title to it and say he is, or could be if his destiny is realised, the King for all.

But then again I have only read the first two books.

Well that is the $64 question but as Kate has already said to this humble poster and many others the answer is alrerady there in the text! Therefore we need to get smarter, time to take out that marker pen and reread the series ...

As per Kelpie's and Rahl's comments I suspect Alain will be a pivotal character in presumably bringing about eventual peace but will hopefully prove to be another one of Kate's neat revelations before the end...:D

Aaahhh... Gollum, but if we work it out, I'm sure we can figure it out. So, what do you think he is...
I have a think he may be half god...

In The Burning Stone, Rosvita has a dream when she wakes she thinks she heard Theo (the princess) complaining, but I don't think so...
TBS pages 446 PB
"The lost ones surrounded her, crowding her with their jewel eyes and barbaric clothing, whispering secrets in her ears: 'I did not protest as long as I saw that our lord father preferred his firstborn, for that is the way of things, and as one of those who came second I did not mind waiting behind the first, because I saw that he was worthy. But what good is my high birth if our lord father marries again and sires younger children whom he loves more and sets above me? Why shaould I serve them, when I came before them? Is that not why the angesl rebelled?"

My thoughts are that the Lord Father or God or in this book 'The Lord' is Alain's father... That maybe the blessed Diasan is an older brother.
Thoughts?

UM.. to be honest Alia I'm really not sure...

You have a much deeper knowledge of the books than I do so as I said I will need to do a reread. In fact I will be doing this but only when In The Ruins is in my posession and the final book is close to release i.e by year's end. I've done this with other series so that I've not had to wait X years before the final parts come out.

Actually sometimes I'll "collect" a series but not start reading it until the final book or two are on the way to the bookstore. It's a technique that requires a fair amont of patience and restraint but one that has generally paid off for me in some cases at least..:D

Hey Gollum, I'm much the same way about not reading a series until the author is done... but I have to admit that when I started to read this series I thought the collection was complete... boy was I wrong.

Yeh I had the same impression although I knew it wan't completed but anticipated it concluding much sooner GRRRR.....:(

However I was at least lucky in that I only discovered Kate elliott in the past 12 months or so, so for me the wait isn't too bad. I feel sorry for the people who first started reading her COS series around 2000. You one of them??

I first read the books right after Adam was born, May 13 last year... so no, I'm not. Since then I have reread the first 3 books and read all 5 so far... I will finish rereading (and that means taking notes ;) )on the last two before the next book comes out...

Whoa busy girl..;)

It's sunday morning here in OZ and I'm just chilling out planning my visit on Monday to more antique booksellers, time to immerse myself in eras past AHHH!!!:D

Signing off now till next time from the Lit God..:)

So are you going to share or just keep quiet until you finish the whole series? Which, btw, how are you enjoying the books so far? Any good? Up to your standard?

I think I can predict that a keen mind like yours, Lace, will entertain many theories before the series is done.

lol... I'm hoping that Lacey's mind will be keen enough to narrow it down to the right theory... well, it would be interesting to see what he thinks anyways. :)

So far he could be anybody. I am having real problems keeping a mental note of who is who historically speaking. It is hard keeping a level of mental serenity after working with raving tards all day. Alain is too cool for shoes, though he is the lonliest hero ever.

You have a child born on may 13th, alia? How very coincidental... I was born on May 13th... I had best friend growing up that was born may 12 and was a year older then me... I work with someone that was born May 13th... When I first moved to texas the room in the house I was staying in was struck by lightening on May 13th... The day i was born the mayor of New York blew up the top few floors of a building to kill a group of radicals...

I keep telling people that May 13th is an odd day.... nobody believes me....

OK, back on topic...
If Alain does become a ruler of some sort, I will wager it will be against his will... After living through what that poor guy has been through... I think a happy ending for him would be finding a wife (that loves him as much as he loves her) and taking over Henri's little shipping business...
From my personnal experience, people like Alain, that have been through things similar to what he has gone through... they want to retire... they want to go to a little village somewhere and be helpful to thier neighbors and live in peace... They do not want to rule the world or become religious icons... At least thats how I feel and I havent gone through a quarter of what Alain has...

For me a happy ending would be Sanglant and Liath running some sort of court or advisory position to blessing... Alain finds a way to be with Adica forever and they live in peace and quiet... Hugh gets what he deserves and suffers a very, very long time... Stronghand leads the Eika to a modern day peace.... Lavastine comes back from the stone sleep and kicks Geoffry in the arse.... Anne comes back from the dead and is given to the Aoi to do with as they wish... Baldwin finally dies (I hate that whimpering little cuss), Ivar grows some balls or Hanna kicks him in his Arse...

wait this wasnt on topic... dangit Alia... making me ramble on again:)

Yes, the little one celebrated his first birthday on Friday the 13th... He suffers from extreme cuteness... I am in big trouble with that one...;)
And I don't make you ramble... it's your talent.

To the subject though...
I would love to copy and paste your description of Alain from Kate's website to here. It was exactly who I think he is and you did an awesome job of saying it so well. After reading it, I knew with out a doubt that he wouldn't be the next emperor. He isn't a leader. I think the next Emperor or Empress would be Blessing... have you read that far yet? Have you finished the series to date?
I think Alain could be the next pura... but I'm still a little ify on that subject. And don't get me started about Hugh... errrrr.... I really don't like him.... errrrr....
Anyways.... I think there is a reason why Alain is connected to so many people... Stronghand, Sanglant, Liath, Hanna, and more... but why?
Any ideas?

PS. You don't care for the homos of the story? hehe

nothing against "homo's" at all... I read mercades lachey's work... the last herald mage was a very good series btw...
I just cant stand whiney, sniveling, ignorant crybabies... Baldwin's looks wouldn't have lasted if he was around me for long... Hard to look good when your missing teeth and in bad need of facial reconstructive surgery(SP? I am tired...) I think between him and Hugh both I would have been a busy man... hehe

A lot of people on Kate Elliott's forum couldn't stand the homo part of the books... in fact they hated Baldwin with a passion for that very reason... I was just wondering. Baldwin doesn't bother me... It's Hugh and Tallia I can't stand. I couldn't stand Anne either, but she was bearable...
