one of the BEST sci fi books of recent years is the Promise of the Child by Tom Toner. Can't recommend it enough!

Chris Wooding's Ketty Jay series is a fun read with elements of sci-fi (steam punk) and fantasy.

Well it's probably all a bit redundant since the op hasn't posted since Jan 2016, but I'm surprised that since the op identified Banks, one of the leading authors in the British new wave of SF, no one has mentioned Neal Asher who I now see has taking up Bank's mantle in that regard.
