January 2016: What Are You Reading?

So I scrubbed that one off the list and have now started the third of C J Cherryh's 'Foreigner' books - Inheritor - instead.
I have wondered about trying those Foreigner books. As you are on the third, I presume you quite like them?

They're definitely growing on me! I had to make two attempts at the first one. I found it a bit of a slog because the pace is sedate, and the POV is locked throughout, so there are long passages of the main character's thoughts, which I felt got a bit repetitive at times. But I read the second book at the start of this month and found myself thoroughly enjoying it. Cherryh's alien cultures do impress me, and I'm really enjoying the third one now, and I like the direction the story is taking.

The (loose) comparison which keeps springing to mind is that the story, at this stage, is like a science fiction version of Shogun, one man on an alien shore dealing with another culture and all that entails, but I think it's going to go beyond that fairly soon.

Okay, thanks, sounds worth keeping on my wish list. :)

Just finished the excellent Hairy London by Stephen Palmer. Review Here.

And after spending the better part of two years reading material mostly by Chronners, I'm returning to the book pile and am reading other stuff too, starting with Terry Pratchett: A Slip of the Keyboard.

Can't believe as a fan of Sir Terry, I haven't heard of this book! On my next order.

Now reading Daniel Silva's The Fallen Angel, couldn't resist a spy thriller with Vatican entangled in it. Silva's recent books seem to have fallen into the old pattern but still good, well researched and up to date.

Reading 'After Such Knowledge', an omnibus of four novels by James Blish. So far, read the long and densely written historical novel, 'Doctor Mirabilis', about the 13th century philosopher/scientist Roger Bacon. And the shorter very dark novel of black magic, 'Black Easter'.

Finished Gypsy by Carter Scholz, the third generation starship story that was published in 2015. Not sure which of the three is the best, however - they each do different things best. Now reading Dave Hutchinson's Europe at Midnight, and very good it is too. It'll be taking one of the novel slots on my BSFA Award ballot for sure.

Just about to start Sara Raasch's Ice Like Fire, the sequel to Snow Like Ashes (which I loved). Very excited!

*Stares at a humongous To Be Read pile both on her bookshelves and on her tablet*

How on earth did I end up with almost 100 books in my possession that I haven't gotten round to reading yet?

That's all?

Amateur.

(*cough*) Anyway, and oddly still on topic for both your post and the thread, I just started Nightmare Seasons by Charles L. Grant. I recently came across this while sorting, organizing, weeding my collection, having pretty much forgotten I owned it, and within a week saw that another forum (mainly for weird/horror fiction) was trying to form an on-line book club to read some older works and this was one of the books selected. Synchronicity?

Finished Uncommon Purpose by @Droflet I can see why it's doing so well. TBP has a winner there :)

I have moved on to Malice by John Gwynne, and I am looking forward to a monster epic fantasy book right now. I hope I can get through it since I already had to renew it once from the library and I've only just started. 2016 reading level has been stifled so far!

Finished Midian Unmade, definitely recommend this to any fans of Clive Barker's Cabal.

Just started R. Scott Bakker's The Darkness That Comes Before

Still bashing my way through Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. Very enjoyable it is, too.

Next up on the To Be Read pile is either Uncommon Purpose by our very own PJ Strebor, or Half a King, by Big Joe Abercrombie - haven't decided which yet.
