Tackling The Ego of Celestial Bodies

The planet lived! It tore from orbit, a predator spewing crimson magma from its satanic maw.

Top seed was insufficient; the world was faster.

“Fly into the mouth! Shields on full!”

Our weapons scoured its surface; the planet screamed silence in the void.

On impact lava smothered us.

“Warp now!”

We stretched across infinity, tore through core, mantle and crust. The world pulled inside out, torn apart in hellish cataclysm.

Once more, exploring the unknown.

THE SEND-OFF

I woke up slowly, unable to move.
I figured my long space journey had affected my mobility and it would return in time.
"Where am I ?", I asked.
" You made it to the land of milk and honey, son"
"Must look like Paradise to you."
I looked around, everything I loved was right there, trees, grass, lakes, rivers, sunshine.
"Look again, beautiful people everywhere, smiling, saying hello."

"YES!"

"The prisoner's ready, proceed with the injections."

It's Not Child's Play...

“Alice, leave that alone!”

“I just wanted a try!”

“It's not a toy!”

“So unfair. Why can't I have a turn?”

“You're only a kid. It's a specialised job.”

“Yeah, right. Looks easy to me.”

“Well it isn't.”

“So you say. Look, how about this...”

“Oh my God. What have you done?”

“Put a river in it. That'll make it look more natural.”

“And knowing you, you'd probably call it something like 'The Grand Canyon'.”

Fantastical Creatures and Where to Find Them

“Tell me again why we look like this?”

“The previous inhabitants of the planet below created us in their image, to keep the planet safe.”

“And then they were destroyed by the comet?”

“Yes. But, as you know, Bob, nobody ever turned us off. The planet is remade, but we’re still here, keeping everything from contacting it. A giant ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign, that’s us.”

“A giant, rainbow-unicorn-pegasus-kitten ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign.”

Genesis

Adam stared through the view-screen at the planet options they’d been offered. First settlers on a world for themselves. He smiled at Eve beside him – her eyes wide in excitement. They scrolled through them and stopped on a lush, blue world. There they would start the life they’d earned – away from war.

Pushing the button to their new home, a wormhole opened up; a giant snake leading them to their own personal heaven.

The Hitchhikers

The nano-fairy prophecies had spoken of giants which would, like horses, carry them to the stars. Now was the time. It was walking without its helmet.

The ambush was sprung. The swarm invaded.

Vandermeer felt the urge to sneeze. She snuffed and the urge passed quickly.

Humanity’s fate was sealed.

Three years later: Chief Fairy, Penporsadane, announced the decision. Human births were to be strictly limited. It was possible to have too many horses.

... That Hasn’t Such People In ’t

We’d surveyed hundreds of planets. Found a dozen suitable for colonies. None as lovely as Prospariel.

I wanted to find reasons to reject it, to save it from us. Toxic airborne spores, deadly caliba-waves, unstable tectonic plates.

Then five of the survey team died, choking. Three more were ripped apart in a storm. Finally, an earthquake struck. Killed everyone but me.

The planet keeps me alive. Gratitude, perhaps.

Or its weapon, if others come.

A Different Sort of Multiverse

“Everything looks odd,” said Dale in a… baritone voice? “But here’s the imperial party.”

“The bald tyrant isn’t with them,” said Gordon.

“I’m Min the Mersey Lass,” said the delegation’s leader. “Welcome to Mango, where everyone’s a bit fruity. And you are—”

“The beautiful Gordon,” said Princess Vulcan, her cheeks flushing.

“And Dale Ardon,” said Princess Thong dreamily.

“I don’t understand,” said Gordon.

“The ship’s navigation software…” Zarr coughed nervously. “Its PC’s gone mad!”
