Narky, thanks for the info.

One of Martin's methods (at least in ASOIAF) is to present numerous possible directions for the story and then choose an unlikely avenue... Or mayhaps it is to provide so much additional information that I confuse myself as to his direction.

For example, Tyrion Lannister.

He looks nothing like the rest of the Lannisters. His hair is almost white. He claims dwarves are bastards in their father's eyes. He likes fire. He likes dragons. The Mad King had a crush on Tyrion's mother. He must be a Targaryen *******.

Or... Tyrion casts a great shadow. Aemon states Tyrion is a veritable giant. He serves as Hand to a King. He saves KL. Shae calls him a giant. He is convicted of killing a King. He kills a Hand. He serves as Hand to a Queen. He'll someday become King.

Or... Tyrion does not seem like a Lannister. The world said he'd never ride a horse, but he figured it out. Tyrion is ten years or more older than Dany. The rumors at his birth were that he looked like a lizard. Dany's son was like a lizard and had been dead for years. Mirri used blood magic to sacrifice Rhaego's life for Drogo, but merely switched Joanna's and Dany's fetuses. So... Danis actually Tyrion's mother. Tyrion is actually Rhaego, the Stallion Who Mounts the World.... on a dragon, mayhaps.

Or... Joanna died giving birth. Tyrion admits he's grotesque in his very first POV. He assaults Joffrey. He threatens Cersei. He threatens to harm Tommen. After being denied Casterly Rock, he is convicted of killing Joffrey. He kills Tywin. He promises to kill Jaime. It is just what Tywin feared, Tyrion's physique only mirrors his twisted soul because Tyrion will kill all the Lannisters in due time.

Or... Tyrion lost his mother as he came into the world. Cersei tortured him during his childhood. Tywin was hard on him. Gery was nice to him until he disappeared. Tyrion married Tysha, but found out that Jaime was just trying to make him a man. Tywin ordered Tysha's gang rape and made Tyrion participate. Tyrion never pursued romance or familial love or friendship after that... Oh, he'd remain faithful to Jaime and display fondness to Myrcella and Tommen, but never open himself to love... until Shae. Being Hand, going to battle, matching wits with the best of the best in The Game Of Thrones, while facing betrayal by Joffrey, Cersei, Varys, Littlefinger, and Bronn and while desiring Tywin's respect and while facing death from war, or more likely assassination as his two immediate predecessors did, led him into an emotional dependency/bond with Shae...he fell in love. Of course, he killed Shae and Tywin and then went to find the answer to his question, "Where do whores go?" That led him to Jorah, Penny, and Dany. Now his career is back on track (Hand) and he has a real chance at romance. Tyrion might actually live happily ever after.

Which one, or ones, will actually happen?

Rickon Stark pov would be cool. For all that people say Ned failed his children in getting them ready, they all turned out quite capable of facing what the world threw at them. Robb Stark was perhaps the greatest tactical military man in westeros. Jon Snow has proven himself a capable and natural leader who sees the bigger picture. Sansa Stark once faced with harsh reality quickly learned to survive in King's Landing. Arya Stark is a survivor. Bran became whatever he is. Only Rickon remains a mystery. In the tv series he ended up as mere fodder, but in the books i wouldn't be surprised if Rickon becomes the actual lord of winterfell. Sansa seems destined for the south. Either as Lady of the Eyrie of Casterly Rock. Arya isn't what i'd called rulership material. Jon Snow will likely not become the lord of winterfell in the end. He might hold that title for a while, but i don't see him holding on to it. So that leaves Rickon. And i do believe he will survive in the books. Him being in Skagos with Osha and shaggydog at his side seems like a good tale worth learning about.

Massive SPOILER Alert!!!

Kiwi, I've been a detractor of the Eddard Stark school of parenting. Yes, the kids have skills... and even more importantly, all of them are ethical. Morality is more important than ability... it's just that it leaves the Starks vulnerable to the unscrupulous villains surrounding the Iron Throne. Mayhaps this is just GRRM turning the teenage messiah trope on it's head, but for their brilliance and skill... Robb and Jon both willingly/blindly walked into traps. They handed out weapons to their enemies/allies and marveled when they were literally stabbed in the back. Again, mayhaps that is just GRRM (writing ASOS in his mid forties and ADWD in his fifties) knowing a teenager just cannot properly lead older men in politics.

It's probably GRRM; he has Dany fail at least as spectacularly as Robb and Jon... the death count surrounding her, her court, her followers, her subjects, her allies, and her enemies is worthy of the Dothraki.

As for Rickon, I agree.
