Which books Give you the Best Literary Visions of the End of Civilization and end of the World ?

Swan Song by Robert McCammon. Such an awesome vision of the end of the world, characters you come to care for, and a villain with supernatural power.

McCammon is definitely on my to-read list but I was planning to read Boy's Life which sounded like it might be his best.

Well, I'm actually supposed to be reading Boy's Life right now (I'm only a chapter in) but it to me doesn't come anywhere near Swan Song which I just breezed through. I know it has won awards though and gets high praise so I'm going to power through it regardless.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe?

Nice to think the world ends with a paid-for slap-up meal.

The Last Battle. (CS Lewis)

Both of those have interesting endings:)

I echo this, definitely a memorable read for me. Also The Forge of God by Greg Bear. Although more hard SF than literary I found it an impressive 'end of the world' read.

I loved The Forge Of God, particularly the depth of description of the destruction of the earth. Those waiting and viewing in the mountains, I think that's what I'd do.

Indeed , that had a really nasty ending.

There's a lot about that book that I think I underrated whilst reading. I actually found it hard to read on the first read through. It really did build chapter by chapter though. And pushing through it the first time was very different to reading it the second time.

For me Greg Bear and The forge of god was the first Sci Fi novel I really loved. But halfway through I could have easily put it down.

What Bear did with great effect was build on our natural attitude to both expect the worst and doubt it likely simultaneously.

Cloud Atlas. Vivid detail, and the non-linear storytelling, through characters living at different points in time, truly sucks you in.

The Star Rover by Jack London about a Straitjacketed DeathRow in mate who discover he can astral project himself into his past lives at will. If you like Cloud Atlas you'll like this book. It takes you across time ,space and History. Its a great book and it not a well known book.:)

Im always Glad to do so

three more to mention and I will give it a rest for now :)

The Dark World by Henry Kuttner underrated Classic

The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson Its ben in print since 1908 spectacular read.

The City of the Singing Flame and Its sequel story Beyond The Singing Flame By Clark Ashton Smith one of the greatest writers of all time.

The Abyss by Jeremy Cunningham It's quite literally Apocalyptic .:)

Personally, the closest I have seen to something that made sense to me was John Ringo's "Black Tide Rising". I find it very plausible that someone will create a bio-weapon that basically kills everyone. Now maybe they won't turn in to zombies like in the series, but the concept of the world slowly and the quickly turning off the lights and then civilization trying to turn them back on worked for me. Also it is Ringo's only series that he actually finished so it has that going for it.
