Tor.com opening to SF novellas

Well, crap. Though I'd read this... but $8.99 for a kindle version??

Cathbad, if you want a taster of the Lock In world, there's a free prequel short story on Tor.com. Just put in a search for Scalzi. I can't remember the name, though, but it's pretty cool. It's written as a sort of documentary piece with 'interviews' from health and technology specialists about the events that precede Lock In. (hmm, thinking it's maybe called something related like 'Unlocked'...)

Phew. I'm in. I have a couple of busy weeks for work coming up and had to get it submitted today. Been a lot of work, cutting something from 60 to 30k words but it's all the better for it.

If it doesn't go I think I'll either self publish it or use it as a freebie for those who join my mailing list. :)

@Kieran Song - ebook and POD they say.

Argh. I actually have something I could submit if it wasn't only 3/4s finished. My one and only Sci-Fi and I've kept back on it because it's one of my few non-horrors that I'm actually pleased with. Thing is, I'm really surfing a wave on my WIP at the moment and I'm loath to stop and change to finish to sub...

I'm going to have to have a long hard talk with myself.

After chocolate and a cup of tea...

I gave it a shot last week, did 15k before abandoning as too clichéd. It was my first attempt at the format and I can't say I was totally enamoured - as Stephen King said it's too long to be short and too short to be long. But I like Tor a lot and really want to submit so I may have another go next week as I think I'm a fast enough writer to still beat the deadline.

Good luck Jo and Wruter...

Yikes! I didn't submit on the 19th! I hadn't even started writing it then. I'm going to submit later today, the 29th.

A question for the wiser heads here if I may: I've been an active member of the Tor.com site as a fan for a long time. Do you think it's worth mentioning this in my cover letter or would it make me seem too fannish/unprofessional?

Changed my mind about submitting. There's no point unless I'm 100% behind what I've written. In the past few weeks I've made two attempts, one which stalled at 15k, one at 20k. Clearly the novella form just isn't my thing, it either feels like a bloated short story or a withered novel. Stephen King says he's never written a novella on purpose and now I know why. Oh well, another 35k to chalk up to experience.

Oh dear - sorry that I goofed and even more sorry to see you're not subbing. It does make me wonder how many novellas in the four categories (Space Opera, Time Travel, Near Future Thriller and Cyberpunk) they will actually receive. Novellas don't seem to be as popular as short stories or novels.
