They was or They were.

I use 'they' as my gender neutral singular pronoun (but with the plural verb forms) and have done for as long as I can remember.

I'm glad to see that other people are catching up. :)


I wonder what the Germans do**.... They use sie as the non-gender neutral feminine third person singular pronoun (i.e. "she") AND sie as the gender neutral third person plural pronoun (i.e. they). They also use Sie -- note the capitalisation -- for the second person (singular and plural) formal (or "polite") pronoun (i.e. you), using it in (at a hand-waving level) in the same way as the French use vous rather than tu for a person who is not (formally) close to them.


** - I was going to suggest they use the pronoun associated with the German noun for person, but there are two of them, one masculine(Mensch) and one feminine (Person)....
