You Can Try But...

Chris stands in the cell doorway. “Governor wants to see you. Follow me.”

I follow him. On the right the door to the Lounge is open. The voices of long-term inmates Victoria, Ashleyne, Starbeast and Droflet spill out.

To the left Vaz, Cat's Cradle, Mosaix, Johnnyjet and Shyrka pass the time in the Games Room.

We enter the Governor's office. “You realize you're free to leave at any time?” says Brian.

“Yes. Can I try now?”

“Of course.”

Chris and I approach the main gate. It's open. I step out, pause, turn and step back inside. “My cell still available?”
