The detective (a policeman who's lot is not a happy one) did it, for the sake of his cat.

I'm an American, Two Ronnies fan (since I was a teen). This is a great sketch (watched it a few times here). This bit reminds me of an Abbott & Costello TV episode, where Lou worked at an ice cream/candy store.
