(Edited the poll instructions into this post from the thread merge)

I've attached the poll compiled from all submissions provided in the thread. In total we have 210 items, to say the least I am very impressed with some of the contributors knowledge of the genre's, there are a lot of titles here I have never heard of (which is what I was hoping for!). I'm hoping that the final results will coalesce into a nice solid list on their own, it all depends how aggregated/spread out the results are, if it ends up being really spread out, I may have to come up with a system to aggregate it some more into a more reasonable sized list.

Here are the rules of the poll:
1. You are allowed to change your votes, not sure if this means you can go back in after submitting, or just during the process of submitting, but I'm not against somebody changing their minds should they choose to.
2. The results will not be displayed publicly, nor will they be view-able without voting. I want to avoid any potential pre-vote influence.
3. The poll will be up for one week.
4. Voters will be allowed to select up to 30 items (but you can choose less).

Some final thoughts:

1. Just a reminder, the goal here is for Essential reads (not necessarily your personal favorites), I've been thinking of that as a combination of popularity and influence, but feel free to interpret how you see fit.
2. Please try and avoid not voting for something simply because you feel its a sure bet without your vote. I tried to select a vote limit that wouldn't make people feel too constricted, but also prevent the final result from being to large, we'll see how I did.
3. I tried to catch all of the duplicate entries, however if I missed any, the results for the duplicated entries will be combined in the final tally, so don't worry about which one you voted for (if you do notice a duplicate, a comment in the thread regarding such would be appreciated).

The final results of this poll will be my reading list, so if anyone is interested, you will be able to view my progress through it in my reading log section of my blog here on the Chronicles.

Thanks for you help everyone!

(original first post)
***I did do a couple quick searches of the forum to see if this has been addressed already, but I did not come across anything. If there is something I missed, please let me know and I'll go there instead. Thanks!***

I'd like to get some input from the community in creating a list of essential science fiction & fantasy reading. Think of it as a recommended reading list for someone brand new to science fiction and fantasy who has never read anything within the genres.

Here are some rough guidelines for what I'm looking for:

  1. -This is not a list of peoples favorites, or what they feel is essential, but rather what the sci-fi and fantasy community as a whole (authors and readers alike) would largely agree on.
  2. -Can be a single book, anthology, or a series.
  3. -Age doesn't matter 100 years old, or published last year (though I understand it generally takes some time to become considered "essential").
  4. -Should have relatively broad appeal, basically if the recommendations needs a preface such as "if you like robots 'so & so' is essential reading", it should not be included.
  5. -Awards or critical acclaim at the time of publication are not necessary. There are plenty of instances where a piece of art (writing, music, etc) do not receive the credit they deserve until long after they were created or the creator has died.

The end goal of this thread is to comprise an actual to-read list for myself. I've been a lifelong fan of science fiction and fantasy, yet I find most of the classics that people would consider essential I have not read, I've made it a goal of mine to rectify this.

I know this can be a very loaded question, and that's the reason for the rules I put in place. Basically I want to keep the final list a manageable size (I have no idea what manageable is at the moment).

Lastly, I know I could do a Google search and come up with 100+ examples of this list, but I'm legitimately interested in what the community here thinks should be on this list, plus I think if this thread catches on, it could be a lot of fun.

Thanks for your considerations!

Off the top of my head:

Mary Shelley: Frankenstein
Robert Louis Stevenson: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
H. G. Wells: The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine, obviously, but also The Invisible Man and even more strongly suggested, The Island of Dr. Moreau; a selection of his short stories would be not be amiss, either
H.P. Lovecraft: At the Mountains of Madness
John W. Campbell, Jr.: "Who Goes There?"
Alfred Bester: The Demolished Man; The Stars My Destination (a.k.a., Tiger, Tiger)
Frank Herbert: Dune
Frederick Pohl: Gateway
Joe Haldeman: Forever War
The S.F. Hall of Fame
anthologies; The Big Book of Science Fiction looks to be a reasonable substitute and The Road to Science Fiction series would be a good supplement
Ray Bradbury: The Martian Chronicles
Isaac Asimov: I, Robot; Foundation
Robert Heinlein: The Past Through Tomorrow
William Gibson: Neuromancer
Cordwainer Smith: The Rediscovery of Man

This is just a start.

This is a great start, a lot of these I'm familiar with, but quite a few new titles. Thanks!

To add to Randy's list above....

Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings
Lewis: Out of the Silent Planet
Stewart: Earth Abides
Haggard: She
Doyle: The Lost World
Orwell: 1984
Budrys: "Rogue Moon"
Moore and Kuttner: "Vintage Season"
Dick: A Scanner Darkly
Adams: Watership Down
Simak: Way Station

Not yet widely known, but worth reading in company such as this -- Vodolazkin's Laurus.

Add
Larry Niven: Ringworld
Robert Heinlein: Stranger in a Strange Land
Harry Harrison: Make Room! Make Room!
Orson Scott Card: Ender's Game
Daniel Keyes: Flowers for Algernon
Brian Aldiss: Helliconia series
C.J. Cherryh: Downbelow Station

@BionicGriff Did you see the5th & 6th threads down in General Book Discussion?
I did not, I figured someone had to do something along these lines already though. I searched a couple key words but those threads didn't come up, then I scanned through the Classic SF&F forums a bit, thanks for pointing those out.

Having looked over them very briefly just now, for my purposes of coming up with a solid reading list, they are almost too large. I'm really just looking for the cream of the crop, or de facto must reads within the genre.

I'm sure I'll scan through those more at a later date though, appreciate the tip.

It will be interesting to see what is offered now specifically in response to BionicGriff's question.

Harry Harrison: Make Room! Make Room!

Can you compare it to Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar? (I've read neither.)

I'll nominate George MacDonald's Lilith, G. K. Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday, Charles Williamsis The Place of the Lion, Lewis's Narnian Chronicles, and Ursula Le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea as essential fantasy classics; and, for short stories, Jorge Luis Borges's The Aleph and Other Stories, 1933-1969, although some of the stories aren't fantasies and perhaps only "The Immortals" is sf.

It will be interesting to see what is offered now specifically in response to BionicGriff's question.
I'm pretty interested to see how this plays out. I really have no idea how many titles to expect (there are already plenty here I've never heard of), but if I get enough I'd like to put together a survey comprised of every title provided, post it up here and ask everyone go through and select X number of titles. Once I consolidate the survey results we'll have a "definitive" list of essential titles.

I think you have a great list so far. Some really excellent choices.

There are a lot of great authors but along the lines of the OP:

Isaac Asimov: The Gods Themselves
Roger Zelazny: The Chronicles of Amber (Lord of Light is supposed to be great but I haven't read it, you might want to check it out though).
Vernor Vinge: A Fire Upon the Deep
Dan Simmons: Hyperion Duology (Hyperion & Fall of Hyperion)

Im not going to start with huge list. I just got home from work I ll open with these two.:)

To the list I'll add:

Aldous Huxley - Brave New World
Issac Asimov - Caves of Steel
Iain M. Banks - Excession
Harry Harrison - The Stainless Steel Rat
Terry Pratchett - Guards! Guards!
Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Nice, more new ones too me.

I've actually just read Caves of Steel and am now halfway through The Naked Sun, really great books.

I would like to add:

Arthur C. Clarke: Rama
Richard Mathieson: I am Legend & The Shrinking Man

I misread yesterday and thought you were only asking for s.f., BionicGriff. Here are some fantasy works:

I’m drawing a blank on specific titles because so much of their work has been shuffled and reissued in different collections, but representative collections by Lord Dunsany, Clark Ashton Smith, Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont and Fred Brown would all be strongly recommended.

Charles Finney: The Circus of Dr. Lao
Ray Bradbury: Something Wicked This Way Comes; The October Country (story collection)
Fritz Leiber: Conjure Wife; Our Lady of Darkness; Night’s Black Agents (s.c.)
Peter Beagle: The Last Unicorn; The Rhinoceros Who Quoted Nietzsche and Other Odd Acquaintances (s.c.)
Jonathan Carroll: The Land of Laughs
Caitlin Kiernan: The Red Tree and/or The Drowning Girl
Ursula K. Le Guin: The Wind’s Twelve Quarters (s.c.: this choice might betray bias on my part; it was one of the first things I read by her; others may feel her novels are more important/essential)
Zenna Henderson: The Anything Box (s.c.)
Angela Carter: The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (s.c.)
Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Mervyn Peake: Titus Groan
John Collier: Fancies and Goodnights (s.c.)

I didn't list specific short stories, because that could get lengthy.
