Discussion Thread -- April 2017 75-word Writing Challenge

@Parson The Dark Lord has asked me to pass on that he'll be sending round Norman the Troll to pass on his thoughts about golf.

He did though compliment the fine assortment of spirits he saw in the 19th and the range of drinks wasn't too bad either.

OK, I have three projects going on. I have the seventy-five-word story, three hundred word story, and a short story to be submitted and hopefully get into an anthology. Emphasis on the hopefully.

What does this mean? I finished the seventy-five worder. Luck does exist.

Hope my writing holds up.

:notworthy: (Why is everyone so good? Need to get my post count up. Sigh.)

All of you are great writers!

For me, your writing held up just fine, Walled Cities! Welcome to the challenges...there's a 300 worder this month, too! :)

Thank you for the warm welcome.

With these challenges, and my own late night writing. I should improve steadily.

I'll try my hand at the 300-word challenge as well.

*Rolls up sleeves.*

That photograph for the 300-word challenge has me nonplussed, though. A real head-scratcher. o_O

Oh well I'll figure it out.

Thanks again!

@Jason McGraw .... brings us a macabre fantasy of giants friendly and otherwise who can see only fun in a game called "Play with the Bones."
Welcome to Chrons Jason. Very brave of you to make your first post in a writing contest, but your story is good and should stand up well. Thanks for giving it a try.

@Calliopenjo .... goes for a friendly game of dragonball which ends as many such games do,"Strike-Opps."

@Ashleyne .... adds a dose of prescience to a tender heart and creates someone you'd like to know even if they admitted: "I'm a Stalker."

@Walled Cities .... comes to a crossroads. Will he live predestined or will he live free? After all he is the "Dragon Crawler."
Walled Cities quite an impressive first entry. You made Google my friend. I did not know "baldric," "panoply," or "deracinated." I can't remember the last time a 75 word story had 3 words I had to look up which didn't relate to some mythology or other.

BigJ -- Sometimes we become so obsessed with our amusements that we forget more important things.

Cat's Cradle -- Sometimes the spectators become part of the game.

Talysia -- Cruelty is in the eye of the slayer.

LittleStar -- A little luck can go a long way.

Cathbad -- Know the rules before you play,

Luiglin -- There's a light at the end of the tunnel, after a lot of traps.

Jason McGraw -- Like flies to wanton boys are we to the gods.

Calliopenjo -- A good player takes care of the equipment.

Ashleyne -- It may be cruel to be kind.

Walled Cities -- The grass is always greener, but look before you leap.

You might wander into some of the older ones and see what sorts of things end up being written in these. Since, as Luiglin says, the photo is only there for inspiration, you'll find it's not as puzzling as it appears. :)

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion.

i'll take a look and see what it's all about. (y)

It's worth noting that in the 300, it doesn't count against you with most people if they can't see where you came by the inspiration, because inspiration is a funny thing that way, but it is definitely a factor in the 75 if you don't stick to theme and genre in a visible way. :)

And, in case nobody's mentioned it to you yet, do be careful to count your words in both BY HAND, forward and backward, and carefully, and ask a moderator BEFORE posting if you have any hyphenated constructions that you aren't sure of, or any other oddities like weird punctuation used as words or alien languages or whatever, because if it goes over, it will have to be removed and you cannot re-enter for the month. Check out the rules thread. We hate when unfortunate things happen.

Play with the Bones, @Jason McGraw♫Got myself a crying, sleeping, screaming, weeping, living doll. Got to do my best to please him just 'cause he's a living doll♫ Chilling to the bone.

Dragonball. Strike-Oops, @Calliopenjo – Playing a game from the back of a live animal, like Polo, can be dangerous. Playing from the back of a dragon creates other, unique, dangers. Brings new meaning to the phrase ‘that player’s on fire!’

I’m a Stalker, @Ashleyne – When someone that can see the future plays Fairy Godmother in their free time, you really have to wonder what they do for a living...

Dungeon Crawler, @Walled Cities – This evocative tale of searching for purpose in the face of adversity is rich with echoes of D&D heritage. Let’s hope those don’t stand for Disappointment & Death…

Whom Gods Destroy, @Victoria Silverwolf – Few competitions are fiercer than those between father and son but this drama of divine destruction makes my family’s Christmas games of Trivial Pursuit look tame by comparison (but only just).

@Shyrka .... A game where the stakes are life and death and there's a window to the past can only be"The Divine Game."

*Great reviews Shyrka! I see you are turning Jason McGraw into Tim McGraw. And you've given a whole new thought to the idea of a player being so hot that s/he's "On Fire!"

Yeah, definitely worth emphasising this. Some of my best entries (in my personal opinion) have been inspired by something completely inconsequential in the picture or something as ephemeral as a feeling it inspired in me.

Thank you, thank you. I've decided to focus on the funny this month so I hope people will excuse my making light of the more serious entries. I blame @Luiglin for making me think of the 'fairway' pun.

Thank you for you review - I'm really enjoying the recently-evolved 'Parson style'. It's fun to see how everyone puts their own spin on the reviewing and to see what different folks take from each story.

@Joshua Jones .... Some of the best games have no rules and there's no way for the one playing the game to lose, for those being played upon.... now that's a different kettle of fish when you are thinking "Of Fun and Dwarves."

Well done Joshua! It's great to have first timers enter the contest, and you've made your first entry a memorable one. I have the picture of the dwarf and the elf dominating my brain right now.

Thank you Parson; you are too generous. I have been following the 75 and 300 word challenges for some time and practicing, but finally worked up the nerve to post one of my works. Glad you enjoyed it, and I look forward to participating in the future.
