A Steamy Tale

Heart pounding, feet drumming a tattoo on wet pavement; breath rasping and vision failing, but I've put some distance between me and the cops.
There. An alley going the right way. I skid round the corner, oversetting bins with a clatter. A glance back. No one.
I slam into a wall. Dead end!
Clanking behind me and a hiss of steam.
They're here.
I reach inside my coat. Time for that invisibility spell.

Going out Swinging

The sky rumbles and I stop to look at the looming clouds. My back itches where my wings used to be.

Trading them may have given me a few more years, but if what I smelled was coming, it wouldn’t matter anymore.

Warriors fall from above, swords swinging freely at the people in the streets.

If this was my end, at least it would be a bloody one.

Heart pounding, I unsheathe Glory.

Of Things Unknown

Once, we caged them here for our amusement. Their living spaces were cramped, certainly, but we protected them and learned from them. And they gave us a great show.

Now, many of us protest this practice. We come to an agreement, as a people: they should not have to be our entertainment, living these closed, hardscrabble lives. We remove the lids from their skyscrapers.

“Go, little humans, fly free.”

But it seems they’ve forgotten how.
