British Fantasy Society Competition

Megan Kerr won the short stories in 2012 BFS Short Story Competition 2012 - out of curiosity went looking on Amazon for books by her and there wasn't anything.
Do you perhaps mean Jo Walton, whose novel published by Tor won the best fantasy book prize in 2012?

I am replying to this simply so I get subscriptions when people reply, so I don't forget about it. Thanks PB!

I have a short that might do for this. Just needs some faffing and 5,000 words may allow it to bulk out a bit. No doubt it will die a firey death but worth a shot. My nice passive melancholy never does too well!

This seems pretty open ended, which I like, but I'm concerned that this being the 'fantasy society' that I'll need to stick some goblins and swords in there. Is this true, or should I go for it because it sounds like they want any sort of speculative fiction? It sounds like we have some here that have done pretty well. Should I go elsewhere with my non-traditional fantasy ideas?

Fantasy is not all goblins and swords. Far from it. Some of my most fave fantasy works don't have traditional fantasy creatures/weapons ie Weaveworld by Clive Barker or The Saga of the Exiles series by Julian May. Even The Dark Tower series by Stephen King could be classed as fantasy in my opinion.

Write your own fantasy. The difference could be what they're looking for.

Is it worth it? Any members around?

Haven't been for about ten years, alas. Their current board says they're doing a lot to re-invigorate it this year though (on Facebook). Step one for me would be to wipe away that old, derelict forum and start over. I'd also see if Lee's up for designing a new logo, since the poor dragon's a bit dated these days and they're doing odd things with it (gradient overlays, for instance) which were never on his style guide.

Megan seems to write short stories, according to her website, so there aren't any novels to look for alas.

They specifically state they want any sort of speculative fiction, so go for it! :D

I used to be a BFS member and they cover Fantasy, SciFi & Horror. My 2013 entry hit the spot with no elves or goblins.
