Names of Ships

cars don't have, in most cases individual names

All cars should be named! Our blue car is Raven (for Mystique - X-Men) and the red one is Barry (Allen). :D

As for ship names, remember that ships (and boats) are often named after people. Why don't you use that to have some fun and make a few discreet tributes to people in your life? I bet the Perp Jrs. would love a space ship named after them. :)

Hell even my guitars are named...

However I'm thinking, although I may be wrong, that there aren't any named ships in the Iliad - just 'X black ships from Greek state Y' (although that might be deemed a name of sorts)

I don't think Odysseus's ship had one either...

Although, in later periods, we get Jason and the Argonauts, who sail on the ship Argo.

Because I was curious, I did find a couple of Athenian ships that were named Paralus and Salaminia. Salaminia - Wikipedia and Paralus (ship) - Wikipedia.

I would guess they probably were all named but the authors didn't consider their names as important as the names of the people sailing in them. I'd be very surprised if they weren't named.

Not all boats have names, Uboats only had numbers, but I bet to their crews that number meant as much as any name.

R2D2?
C3P0?

When the IDs are easily pronounceable it works.
I'm sure there are other examples in tv series or books where the id n° has been shortened to make it a name, but I can't think of any offhand.

SG7825-BW- 03X(8) just gets called X8 by the crew, sort of thing.

Mind you. All my bikes/cars etc get names.

Well not a ship but Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One was shortened to just Seven.

I am reminded of a scene from Star Trek: First Contact where Picard and Data first encounter the 'Phoenix', the first warp-capable spacecraft. Picard reaches out and gently touches/strokes the vessel. Data asks Picard if touching the ship makes it 'more' real. Picard says it does. Data touches it also and remarks he only feels the slight imperfections on its surface.

There is a long history of the notion of 'Animus' or 'souls/spirits' imbued in or onto plants (trees etc) and non-living things. The naming, as opposed to the identification, of innanimate objects probably stems from this ancient belief. People, especially, who spend time and energy creating something that gives value to our lives or reduces the burden of our daily chores, give names to these labours.

Also, giving something a name brings it into our 'family'. We are a social species and making an inanimate object a member of our extended family renders us the illusion of control. We are more able to forgive "George" the non-starting car rather than number plate No: GS52 2RC on a cold, winters morning.

Machines identify, people personalise.
