E E 'Doc' Smith worked this in in the 30's - in the Lensmen's universe, slower ships were spherical, but super-fast ones were tear-drop shaped. Fastest of all were 'speedsters', which were cigar shaped. Mind you, as long as the inertialess drive was running, it didn't really matter if they were in intergalactic space or landing on a planet with atmosphere...
