Discussion Thread -- October 2017 75-word Writing Challenge

Been a hectic month for me this month, but I've finally made it around to reading the stories and voting...

My shortlist is:-
Victoria
Chrispy
Vaz
Cul
Hazelrah

This month Hugh takes my top prize, though run pretty close by Cul(y)

Now I have to go think of a 300 worder and write that before that closes(n):mad:

LUIGLIN, thank you for the vote, made my day, no it made my week, heck, it made my month!

Thanks to Victoria and Parson for the reviews.

Thanks to Nixie, Hugh and Parson for the listings, means a lot to me.

Got my vote in, tough choosing from all the great stories this month.

Temp dropped 40 degrees from last week, have to button up the outdoor stuff, congrats to the eventual winner if I don,t get back in time.

Bob

*Victoria -- The Voice of Leviathan*
CC -- From County Cork

Bob Senior -- Night Life
paranoid marvin -- 'Ware the Kraken (A Sea Shanty)
johnnyjet -- Upon This Marble Sea
Parson -- Sail the Sea of Stars
Littlestar -- For Now
mosaix -- Sun, Sea, Sand, Sex

Cul -- Salt and Sorrow
TJ -- Her Body a Living Sacrifice
Phyrebrat -- Never the Twain

Well, ship-mates, I don't think it's all hands on deck yet as far as voting is concerned, which is a pity, but with the sun well over the yardarm, here are my thoughts on this month's Challenge.

Like mosaix, I didn't think all the entries quite met the theme, and one or two failed to meet the genre which seems odd when it was so broad, and one or two more I didn't understand even after several reads. Nonetheless, that left a plethora of sea-tales to be considered, from which I've pressed the following motley crew into service:

chrispenycate -- Lifeboat
Culhwch -- Salt and Sorrow
Hugh -- Home
nixie -- Unseen
Shyrka -- To Die For
Teresa Edgerton -- Where Late the Mermaids Sang
Victoria Silverwolf -- The Voice of Leviathan

I managed to get the list down to a boat race between Chris and Cul, and I tacked back and forth for a while, but finally made landfall and gave my vote to Chris and his story of human courage and bloody-mindedness.

Well, splice the mainbrace! I'm delighted at the notice my ship sacrifice has gained. So trim and ship-shape thanks for the mentions, shortlistings and second-placings CC, holland, nixie, Peter, Joshua, Parson, johnnyjet, Vaz and TDZ, and ocean-sized promised-land thanks for the wonderful votes paranoid marvin (thank you for the lovely words!), Mith and Teresa! Oh, I've got stealth votes, too! Thank you Suzanne and ratsy!

T. J. his story speaks to my heart! Thank you.
I thought it would have special resonance with you, Parson. I'm delighted you liked it.

If the cap fits... :p

(I confess I did have to look up what an ATV was, and I'm still not sure I got the right definition -- Associated Television, right? ;))

Am I too new to enter?
You're not too new, but you are too late to enter this particular Challenge as it closed for stories on the 23rd, and we're actually coming to the end of voting now, to see who will win. If you'd like to vote, you're more than welcome. You've a couple of hours left in which to read the stories in the Challenge thread which is here OCTOBER 2017 -- 75 Word Writing Challenge -- READ FIRST POST! At the end of it you'll find a link to the poll, where you can vote.

However, we do have another Challenge which is still underway for a few more days -- the 300 Worder which requires a story of 300 words or fewer in the genre of SF, fantasy or other speculative fiction inspired by its image. That Challenge is here. 300-word Writing Challenge #27 (October 2017) -- READ FIRST POST! If you fancy entering, we'd love to see your story, but perhaps just have a read of the rules first (Rules for the Writing Challenges) and do check your word count very carefully!

Thanks, Judge and Danny. I wrote something for this one, but I've found it had a similar twist to someone else's, so I'll save it and look at the other one.

Well, hang onto the story you wrote for this one. As danny said, we have a 75 word Challenge every month, and you never know when another theme and genre will crop up that will fit it!

Since you've read the other stories, though, I do hope you'll vote in this month's Challenge -- we regularly have some people who entered who don't manage to vote, so we rely on non-entrants to make up the shortfall!

Welcome to the forum! Sometimes it is better to post an entry before reading other entries; but if it's similar to someone else's then don't worry as each entry is judged on it's own merits.

I'm sure that most regular members will agree that the more challenges you contribute to, the more accomplished your entries will become, and it becomes a very satisfactory experience to shape an entry into 75 words or less - even more so when you get mentions or votes
