Star Trek - Discovery - 1.06: Lethe

The skillsets required for scientists are different than those for explorers.

Not really. All of these vessels are carrying science missions. Even USS Defiant, which was solely designed to be first purpose-built warship in the StarFleet, carried some science missions. There are a lot of scientists aboard USS Discovery. More so than there are soldiers, which if USS Discovery would be a solely build warship would be its compliment. The scientists wouldn't have as much room and latitude as what they're enjoying aboard Lurka's vessel.

At some point Lurka might not have any other choice but to go rogue if the admiralty decides that they are really going to need USS Discovery for hard missions at the front. Thing is they might have already talked about taking Lurka away, and putting him into a forced medical leave. So for now, he is more mutineer than what Michael has ever been. Even Sarak falls into same category for not telling his daughter that she was accepted into the Vulcan Expeditionary Group.

For all this time Michael thought that she never made it.

I still can't get the admiral's reaction for Lurka's gun. She went bonkers instead of understanding what the dear captain is going through. Thing is I cannot remember time when they've talked about the space sickness or what it does to people to be out there far away from the family and being isolated into the power position. Hence, why I think the StarFleet thought that the Galaxy glass carrying whole families is the best thing for the explorers.

USS Discovery is still exploring and logging the data even if it conducting military operations in the front line.

Star Trek has generally stayed away from the realism of space travel. Instead they made it homely. They made the galaxy class spaceships into a home so that "doesn't happen," even though we all know that it very well would. Even as they would say, the holodecks are no match for the real thing. I think Enterprise touched upon the dangers of space travel and Archer missing Earth. But in TOS you'd think Kirk was born in space and according to the JJ movies he was! Only when kirk gets older does he yearn for home and the respect of his son, but then on top of that Kirk retired is not a happy krik and he has to get back out there.
