Discussion -- January 2018 -- 75 Word Challenge

Congratulations, @SPoots! Unfortunately, my last couple weeks exploded faster and more thoroughly than Alderaan, so I don't think I have even read all the entries, much less voted or made a shortlist.

And thank you @Teresa Edgerton, for the mention, which saved me from a wash this month.

For those so inclined, in addition to the 75 word challenge, I will be hosting a 100 Word Anonymous Challenge over in the workshop! Expect to see the theme and genre posted on the first of the month.

Congrats to SPoots

And a thank you to Cathbad, pB and The Judge - seems like either I hit home hard or missed by a mile this month!

Tired and stressed, so nearly got the all important thank you(s) to the wonderful Bob and equally wonderful Hoops for the votes :D

congratulations @SPoots. a great story that squeaked in ahead of @EPT Henry for me, mainly because it was such an enjoyable read.

and well done on winning a challenge after only a hundred and something posts. some of us are still waiting after thousands!

I wrote two versions of my story. I had no idea which one was most likely to appeal, but when the ending of the second version came to me it just felt right so that is what I entered.

Here is the first version:

Whose Road Trip?

May’s family fled the blazing city: down a hundred miles of burning asphalt, past sights unspeakable.

Five days since the winged aliens landed. Government, religion, nobody agreed what to make of the angel/demons. Society collapsed. Humanity turned savage.

A white-robed figure landed in the road. Brakes screeched, tires squealed.

“What do you want of us?

The alien shrugged. “We took a wrong turn at Venus. Can you give us directions to the astroid belt?”

Hey everyone, a friend just told me of this 80 word contest. There doesn’t seem to be any limit on entering previously published works, as long as it doesn’t go against any existing copyright, so it might be a good place to send some of your 75 word stories.

Those five words I so struggled to remove will have a home again! ;)

Although it does have one of those conditions I'm not a fan of (point 4).

Back in September I produced some half-year stats for the 75s. With only 2 months left of the Challenge year, I thought it was time to update the leader board.

And in pole position, it's still Teresa, now with a grand 33 votes in 8 Challenges! I'm flailing away in 2nd place with 28 votes, trying desperately to keep ahead of mosaix -- who has leapt well up the board thanks to those two wins this year, dammit! -- who has 26. (I'll be watching who votes for him from now on. Notes will be made in my Very Black Book, and Repercussions May Follow...) He in turn is stamping on TDZ's hooves as she gallops along in 4th place with 24, though her pace has slipped a little; then comes Joshua in 5th place on 21. Snapping at his heels is Victoria who has vaulted into 6th place with 20, and Perp and Hoopy in joint 7th on 19 votes apiece, but Hoopy got hers in just 4 Challenges! HazelRah comes in 9th place with 18 votes, and LittleStar with 17 votes is 10th.

So, a few changes in the last few months. Will there be more in the two months to come? Will Teresa keep firm hold of that lead? Can I manage to stay ahead of mosaix and TDZ? Will Victoria continue her storming advance and move further up the board or will Hoopy improve on her incredible 5-votes-a-Challenge average and overtake everyone? Or is there a dark horse somewhere just waiting to make his/her move and shock us all? Stay tuned to the Challenges to find out!

Point 4 is a true stinker. Thank you @AlexH for pointing that out.
