Star Trek - Discovery - 1.13: What's Past Is Prologue

The crew of Discovery may indeed change history - in a manner no one will know what happened except them!

Which should (but won't) make a lot of Star Trek fans happy, since no changes to their precious canon will have been made! ;)
 
They only have about 30 years to fix the timeline. ;)

In 2286, an enormous cylindrical probe moves through space, sending out an indecipherable signal and disabling the power of ships it passes. As it takes up orbit around Earth, its signal disables the global power grid and generates planetary storms, creating catastrophic, sun-blocking cloud cover. If no one is around to bring Whales from the 1980's to the future then the Earth will be destroyed. :(
 
Sorry, yes, it would. That would happen in only a few years from where they are now (9 years in the future.) However, it does take out most of Klingon Space before reaching Earth.
