Old Tech thread

Pretty sure this one will be fake. I'm almost 100% sure PTSD and ADD are terms that were not used back then and probably not OCD.
The really sad thing is that Walter Freeman MD was a real person, and he possibly carried out as many as 4,000 lobotomies on patients as young as 4, most of which were not carried out in hospitals or surgeries.
[Freeman] used a mallet to tap an orbitoclast (a slender rod shaped like an icepick) through the orbital roof. Following penetration of the orbital roof, Freeman would sweep the orbitoclast laterally to obliterate frontal lobe tissue. Additionally, he was able to perform the procedure in an office setting because he anesthetized patients with a portable electroshock machine.

Me, I'll stick to tea. People from the 1860's would still understand how I make my tea (apart from operating my multi-temperature kettle!).

Here's the Illetta in all it's '30s glory (5th from left, above). Talk about bells and whistles - it looks as if it could propel a small steam-launch...

To be fair, that's not the original definition of a metre.
The metre was initially defined, between 1792 and 1799 as one ten-millionth of the distance on the Earth's surface from the north pole to the equator, on a line passing through Paris.
which is easily understood. It's only that convoluted description now because the old measurement was deemed not to be accurate enough.

Unfortunately I think the technology has "improved" since then.
My father used to tell of a childhood memory he had from just following WWII. An uncle of his (who died young) had taken him out to the seaside for the day (It was probably to Tynemouth or Cullercoats Bay) and he asked what some things were that he could see out at sea. So, the uncle took him out in a small boat to see what they were. When he got home again, his mother went absolutely ballistic because the coast was still mined at that time.
