Tor Open Submissions for Novellas - May 2018 and July 2018

I'm #529 now. Looks like the pattern of the back end moving faster than the front end continues!
...which means they're sifting some out behind me in the queue.... at what point I'm not sure... but grinder shows a rejection for someone who subbed 3rd August... so the question is what's happened to Dan Jones as he subbed on 2nd August?

If they divvied them up between various readers, they might not be dealt with in strict submission order, I guess?

I guess whoever got the pile I'm in is sort of speed-reading? Could be a good sign (i.e. loads of unsuitable subs and so they are just chucking those) or bad sign (they aren't reading any subs properly at that faster-than-a-snail speed)...

@Dan Jones - Any news to share?

No movement at my end. Having mooched around some info websites, I doubt whether I'll hear from them until January.

I think it's almost certain now that they must have divvied the whole lot up into thirds - one for each editor who is doing the reading.

Either that or you're in the "take a second look" group that they've set aside for further consideration while they try to weed out the chaff?

Sorry to hear, Dan. Imaginary sympathy hugs and especially smooth dark chocolate by special FTL delivery heading your way.... now!

I'm still stuck on 44 - so no movement for me since I last reported. As you say, Bluestocking, we're the only ones left here, unless we have an undisclosed lurker.... Anyone out there lurking?

Thanks guys.

Are you going to sub it to another publisher?

Yes, at some point, but I’m happy to keep my powder dry for the time being and finish my WIP novel, which is finally nearing its end. As Jo says, open calls are a lottery and I’d rather make a more focused approach to somebody. In any case the novella I subbed is part of a sort-of series (that is, it’s not one story spread over several books, but several different stories on a common(ish) setting and theme) so a stand-alone publication might not have worked anyway.

Good luck to those still in the running.

Onwards!

Yes that one. Ironically, the feedback I got said that, for them, the piece exceeded its natural length slightly, which slowed the pace, but that the premise was intriguing; this after I'd spent time adding more back story to the character of Medas to lengthen it!

Can't recall whose advice it was to do that, though...

Honestly, I'm not overly disappointed. I was only joshing with HB; I do actually think the version I subbed was stronger than the first draft that he saw.

Still, as you say, @Serendipity, I will act upon their feedback , trim it back down and try again. Good that they sent some feedback so I ought to act upon it. I might hold fire until (if) I get hold of an agent though, as these novellas as tricky to sell (my current publisher said she wasn't overly interested even before I'd outlined the premise) and there aren't many open calls for the Great Unsigned.
