24) Trudi Canavan

In a few cases, though, I only read one book by way of a taster, and wild horses wouldn't get me to read more by that author.

I've also started but couldn't finish one by Laurell K Hamilton and I've got Donaldson in my TBR pile.

I've read 24, which is more than I'd have guessed. I agree with others that something is off about this list. Very surprised if Chris wooding has sold as many books as osc. Atwood? Bradbury?

To date, nineteen, although a few of those were one and done for me. Others I've read quite a few things and plan to read more.

I have read forty three of those authors. There are a handful out of those that I didn't finish.
Some I have read everything written by them, and some of those more than once.
(I have been at it a long time.)

I count 25. Feel free to start a new thread with the bigger 2017 list. It's kind of fun. I plan on reading a few more of those.

Eight of them. Some of them I don't remember ever hearing of even here at Chrons -- Canavant, Gabaldon, Colfer, Abnett?

The only one of those four you just mentioned that I know is Abnett. He's notable (in novels) not just for writing a lot of Warhammer 40,000 books but for shaping their setting and filling in a lot of detail. In the world of franchise/shared setting books, he's a big deal: a pulp writer, but very good at what he does.

I scored 17, but there is something about these tests that I never really like. I suppose it's that they don't really mean anything - not that it's really being said that they do.

Gabaldon writes time travel romances, Colfer is mainly a YA author, so I think they'd be very well known among romance readers or YA readers but possibly they're not a great match for most of the prolific posters on here. I think Canavan is meant to write fairly traditional Epic Fantasy.

A thought just occurred to me - is there an author (presumably on the list) that we have all read?
Perhaps there are several. In which case, which books have we all read?
I propose we try to put together a list of such books. A sort of Chronslist. They are, presumably, the basic essentials.

But maybe not?

I can think of some common authors I wish I had skipped.

I'll give it a shot.

I'll bet we've all read at least one book by all of the first four on the list.

1) J.K Rowling (c. 450 million)
2) Stephen King (c. 350 million)
3) JRR Tolkien (c. 300 million)
4) CS Lewis (120 million+)

32 on that list but some of them were dire and DNF and I'd never consider even looking at any other books by those writers.

I would say there's 20 were I've read more than one book by them and would buy more if they write any new ones.
