Star Wars: Resistance - Disney's Animated Series Set In Between The Episodes VII and IX

Tam, Neeku, Kaz, Jarek and BB-8

For the amount of work they keep putting in the Fireball, that racemachine should be in great order. It's because of Kaz that they never get anywhere. So, because Kaz promises to fix what he broke, he ends up being a bounty hunter even though his friend Neeky claims correctly that he is not one to dapple in that side of darkness.

Seeing credit icons flashing in his eyes Kaz tries his best to capture children so that he can claim 20 000 credits. There is nothing good on him, instead Kaz is a kind of foolish Main Character and there is nothing that the great unwashed audience wants to associate with. He is not a great character. Not even a flawed character. Instead he is unwanted, uncherished, and unwelcome character even though at this point, The Rebels had made themselves famous. All of them.

I know that I wished to see more of the non-force people as they most of the time don't get a screen time, because the Force Users and their followers appear far more intriguing. Of the all character they've introduced in the first half of season 1, I like Captain Doza.

He is smart and wise, and he knows how to play both sides, dark and light. Whatever it is he is a right man in right place, and he plays a good character model for the children. The children of Terah in this episode are a pair of "high ranking civilians" that are important to ... Kylo Ren. They tell Kaz that they ran away from the slaughter that Kylo subjugated their people.

The biggest problem is the fact that Kaz is such an untalented scoundrel. He gets them in danger. But, because it's Disney there is a happy ending. The children get away and they reveal an important fact, the First Order is most probably hunting down Force Sensitive Children during the first two movies. What for, we don't know, and I can only assume that Supreme Leader Snoke is continuing one of the Emperor's secret programs.

Maybe that is how they recruit the red suited pilots? And other distinctively different stormtroopers like for example Captain Phasma.

Bucket and Jarek

I have started to love that the characters are giving Kaz hard time for not being, who claims to be. He is no good mechanic, even worse in the Arts of Espionage, but those who are supporting him aren't allowing him to remain goofy (Sorry Disney I had to use that reference). What I find surprising is that with the introduction of Kylo Ren in the last episode, the series has got suddenly much more serious. Then this happened,

nbZmqkW.jpg

I laughed so much when Poe revealed that he isn't happy of seeing Kaz but instead he missed his robot BB-8. But what I really don't understand is why BB-8 travels with everyone else, except him even though those two should be inseparable. Just like C3PO and the Princess Leia, which in the series is still alive and know nothing about upcoming struggle with the First Order.

I was surprised that Poe brought Kaz a new model of the Resistance X-wing. Including it's own BB model called CB-38. There is no information on how their side had come up with so many new astromechs after the fall of the Imperium. Then again there never has been enough of information about anything related to the new canon.

The second surprise is when Kaz complains about the role, he says that he was never trained to be one as he always wanted to a pilot and that is all he knows. So, it's good too him letting off some steam and learning new tricks. When they encounter an emergency beacon transmitting in the sector 6 the plot start to unravel and Kaz unfortunately falls back to the goofy routine.

It is understandable why Poe doesn't give him a side-arm, even though the derelict cargo freighter is full of dangers. Back in the Rebel days that sort of thing would have never happened. Maybe because they had too much to lose if they went into the missions unarmed, unable to fight the other side. Even if it's made mostly from the space monkeys.

Another first thing in the SW universe is the use of cryo-chambers or the hypersleep pods that Poe and Kaz find stashed in the cargo hold, just behind the bridge. The animation doesn't show cold vapour in the air when they open the lid, but the passenger inside it is clearly hibernating.

Why she is there? We don't, but seeing the markings covering her face, it is safe to assume that she is most probably religiously active. Then they deliver the third surprise. The space monkey we have seen occupying Star Wars from the New Hope have a darker side, just like Wookies, whose feral form is far more terrifying than Wookies has even been. Just look at that face and say it's not scary.

We don't know what causes the Space Monkey to get that huge, but if they would have Ezra's kind of Force user with beastiality powers, the big monkey would be awesome to use at SW battlefields.

It is sad that Kaz couldn't keep the Resistance X-wing and CB-38. In the exchange, the Resistance crew gets a new member called Sinara. For some reason she reminds me about Grand Admiral Thrawn, even thought they are not same species.

It turns out that she's a space pirate, but I suspect that she will become a new formal member of the cast, just to give it a bit more colour and meaning. It is also good that Disney continues making this series a bit more friendly for the long time fans. Maybe we'll get more awesome episodes in the near future.

So CTG, what is your overall impression of the new series?

I have been harsh on them, if you haven't read what's under the spoiler tags. Disney made an main character who's like the Goofy from the original Disney universe, and they placed him an important role without giving him a proper training. His side-characters mostly hate him and up until now I would not have recommend any of it, because it's so silly. I'm not even sure I'd allow children to watch it, because it teaches wrong ideas, like for example being a goofy with the serious things is okay, or that you can do almost anything and get away with it.

The Rebels started much, much darker and even though the main audience was supposed to be the kids, it turned to be good for everyone. I really hope that they continue this serious streak a bit longer before they bring in more goofy stuff. So, at the moment, don't watch it. Don't preorder BR's or statues or anything, because it's not worth the time and effort.

The Resistance Agent Jarek and Captain Doza

With the pirate attack looming over the horizon Captain Doza ordered Jarek to fix the Ocean Platform's turrets. He didn't even think for a second that some other crew could probably do a better job then the misfits under Jarek's command or that all the crews in the platform should commit to work-duty for everyone's safety.

Well, the Ocean Platform isn't perfectly managed place even if it's Captain acts as if he knows what he's doing. But in the order for fixing the laser turrets Jarek's crew need 'extremely rare kyber crystals.' I don't get why they are so rare, when everyone and their dogs carry laser weapons and chuck them all over the place, almost as if there's an endless supply of the crystal material.

I loved that the search took them into the area where the scavengers are going through the trash pulled out from the ocean floor. Unluckily for Kaz and Jarek's Chief Machanic Tam, Captain Doza had placed Kaz's new pirate friend Sanara on top of the scrap operation. As scrapping is survival technique, Doza should have been more careful then trusting the new comers so quickly. Sure it's not as flashy job as being a racer pilot but it's a vitally important for the platform operations.

Too for the Pirates that they cannot shoot to save their lives, or even make plans that work. If they would have a strategic brain behind the operations they would be successful instead of once again running away with a tail between their legs.

The last big failure comes with Captain Doza asking for the First Order help against the Pirates. Man, he could do with a detective investigating the matters behind the attacks. But there are no such things in the SW universe.

So disappointed with this so far.

After falling in love with TCW and Rebels this feels like a huge step backwards.

Apart from the anime style not really working (esp in comparison to TCW and Rebels) it’s got:

1) annoying Trekkish ‘alien’ as comic relief. It’s little more that a poor taste joke on Aspergers.
2) uninspired fools journey premise
3) uninspiring fool
4) baitness of Starfighter design
5) 30 seconds of The First Order.
6) Podrace-a-like storyline/backdrop.

So far it’s only been worth it to catch
Phasma (30 seconds in end of ep2
) and tho Poe’s left BB8 with the main character, the droid’s not really doing anything and certainly doesn’t have the impact he does in EP7 & 8.

I liked the generic hero girl’s ship which seems to be heavily based on a T-wing but as for the rest of it...meh.

The Thunderbolt and her ground crew.

It wasn't surprised that Captain Doza called Jarek again as it seem that his crew has become the best operator in the platform. But the problem is that there should be other ones.

The big surpise was that Kaz was treated as a teenager and Jarek had a brother, who was almost as adult as he is. Even though everyone knows him as the famous racer, he was also travelling with a traditional Imperium model for astrodroid. I'm certain that the First Order still uses them.

What tingled me was that Mr Speedstar had got in trouble with the galactic underworld, and therefore, the Hut's if they weren't wiped out by Skywalkers at the end. I laughed out loud when Jarek handed Kaz to Mr Speedstar, when the Deathgang took the last one.

His racer is super cool.

Ypc1BoL.jpg

Jarek's personal racer is even nicer. It looks faster then X-Wing and Mr Speedstar's X-racer. In fact it looks something that would be nice for doing circles around the planets and moons. Even still I loved watching the platform classic race as much as I like watching F1's. The most thrilling event was the gravity fall through atmosphere.

The result of the race was predictable. But I love that death gang. They are my favourite new canon villains at the moment. And I can almost understand their speech.

I also loved that Jarek showed love for his brother, Mr Speedstar.

Wonderful episode. Funny, fast and a bit dark. No Cpt Sexual and no First Order.

Bubbles (and Pooh wearing a spacehat at the background)

Includes First Order, Captain Pier (the golden boy), upgraded Battledroids and a tie to the Emperor. A very good episode.

It is humanising to see normal Star Wars Universe people doing activities like playing 3D games and having pets like Bubbles inside the property. Some say that you see much about how one is by looking at their apartment. I think that as a fact because many times the places we live reflects who we are at current moment. They even open clues about how one lived in the past. But on the quick glance they give better impression on the people than by simply hearing them to or act.

I didn't knew that Taura lived in his father's tower, just under Captain Doza's feet even though it should have been obvious. I wonder if she is becoming a permanent part of Resistance crew once all the mayhem with the First Order kicks in. The Disney hasn't done a good explanation on where the Platform planet in placed in the SW universe and why the First Order is so hellbent on acquiring it through clandestine means.

olZesVm.jpg

I do understand the reasons for why Captain Doza wanted to lock down his daughter Taura with robot called 4D in her flat. But in the same time I don't understand why he would degrade the platform security if Taura is part of the Combat Patrol Team that Doza has arranged after the pirate attacks. As a robot 4D is definitely an upgrade for the old protocol droid design.

If you didn't guess Kaz and BB-8 end up into the story through his spying activities into the First Order. This time however the whole clandestine story is well crafted. It doesn't feel as goofy as the previous attempts. Instead Kaz finally acts like a proper spy. He doesn't tell that he's one but instead he acts as if he's genuinly interested to know why the First Order is arriving at the platform in such a spectucular way as by using the new shuttle that the FO uses for the VIP transport.

gAUK0dK.jpg

Intriguingly enough Captain Pier arrives with force. It is not clear if they used the upgraded Battledroid designs to patrol the Tower corridors. But it is obvious that the First Order likes to present themselves through force instead of using diplomatic means. But if the Battledroids isn't part of their force makeup, Captain Doza must have ties to the Trade Federation and inconsequently to the Emperor.

So, like a proper spy Kaz finds his way into Doza's office and through his goofy malpractice he finds the biggest clue about the Captain and the Platform past.

wjpJxOe.jpg

The Imperial Navy went into hiding after the death of the Emperor and it is very likely that the old New Republic core people has nothing to do with the raise of the First Order. If Captain Doza was the captain back then, it'll explain how he has private lounges for the elite pilots and races for them to show skills. It might be that the platform used to even be where the Tie pilots went to train their atmospheric manoeuvres.

I also loved that Taura figured out that Kaz was a spy.

I've just finished watching Season 1 of The Resistance.

It's a travesty. After CW and then Rebels, I was expecting something far more from them than this pile of toss. And mark my words, it really is. Dross, dreadful, and an insult.

However, I think I was approaching it wrong. I thought it was for the same demographic as the previous animations, but it's clearly for 5-6 year olds. The goofy humour, madcap shenanigans and repeated 'jokes' are worse than Jar Jar's scatological stuff, but something I think 6 years olds will love.

Who can say. I’m happy to watch it (I’ve only seen the first 1.5 hours)and hope it develops but I’m not optimistic.

I was sadly right. See above.

Right now I’m only invested in it to see Captain Sexual.

Barely in it.

More importantly I can’t see myself tolerating autism as a joke.

Became less funny as the series progressed.

What flummoxes me is that this gets a second series when CW was cancelled way back. This series doesn't even deserve a Wikipedia entry, let alone a second season.

Avoid.
