August 2018 Reading thread

I'm having a Kipling weekend ...
Puck of Pook's Hill - It must be approaching 50 years since I last read it!
It'll be interesting to see how my schoolboy memories of it compare with the reality.

How odd -- after the Dune coincidence with Bick a couple of days ago, there's this. I noticed a copy of Puck in a second-hand shop the other day, the only copy I've seen in 40+ years. Maybe when I'm back from holiday I'll buy it.

Now I'm on to Serpentine book 26 in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. I've only continued with this series because I'm invested in it. The sex in these books have become way too much. I don't have an issue with porn but if I want porn I'll go look for porn. This genre is often mixed with sex. Laurell K. Hamilton has been going to far and it's been getting worse. A 3rd or even 1/2 of some of her later books are a solid orgy of human, vampire and shape shifters in both human and animal form. Here's hoping I don't have to skip to much in this book.

Just finished "Heart Shaped Box" by Joe Hill, pen name of Stephen King's oldest son.
A very well written ghost story, not your usual ghostly fare, well thought out.
I'm sure Dad is proud!!!

lolo you're in luck. more Horsemen in this book and less drama lolo

Really enjoyed the Outlaws of Sherwood, which was nice because I've always loved the Robin Hood story and because I had very fond memories of Robin McKinley but wasn't sure how they'd hold up. Very much looking forward to Blue Sword now.

First though, I'm taking a stab at Mother Night, the last of Vonnegut's classics I've not read.

I've finished Tau Ceti the sixth in the El Donsaii series. This story is different than the others in that El Donsaii and her crew only make up the back story of a decent, but shortish stone age alien story.

What’s that series, Parson? I’m not familiar with it, who’s the author?

I'm reading A Gathering of Shadows, by V. E. Schwab. I read the first volume in the trilogy quite a while ago, and don't quite know why it took me this long to read the other two since I did like it.

Only a few chapters into this one so far and so far it's quite good.

Laurence E. Dahmers wrote the Ell Donsaii series. As I said earlier up thread (likely in July?); they are not knock you out fiction, but they are fun reads. "Timba" famously said "They are like popcorn." which I understand to mean, that they are not really a meal but you just can't stop eating them.

I think I've (maybe!) read one or two of them. Are they about this like a super clever and super fit girl? - Ell Donsaii by name?

@dannymcg .... got it in one. But there are biological reasons for how she is which puts it a bit more SF than some.

Thanks Parson!

Reading Age of Assassins by RJ Barker, which I'd describe as a solid trad fantasy story with a writing style and voice that I could use as an example of the perfect style for me.

Just started, as in about 15 pages into, Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys. I've had a copy of this for over 30 years and always put off reading it, so it's past time.
