Illustrations in books - aye or nay?

Do you like illustrations in books?

  • They're good/great.

  • They can work, but only if they're very good.

  • I don't care either way.

  • I dislike them.

A definite yes from me. Dahl, Tolkien, Conan Doyle, Dickens: it's hard to imagine reading book by any of these authors without an interspersing of illustrations. They do have to be very good though, and done by someone who has both a love of the writing and an intimate knowledge of the author. Ideally the author themselves!
