March 2019: Reading Thread

I'm reading one of the book group choices The Psychology of Time Travel, by Kate Mascarenhas. I've only just started it, but it appears to be okay, I'll give you my thoughts once I have finished it.

I've gone back to read All Systems Red by Martha Wells a book I've enjoyed before. The reason for going back now was that I was reminded of it in a books search thread, and decided to bite the bullet and read book 2 of the Murderbot series Artificial Condition. I struggled paying $9.99 for an ebook of only 160 pages, but I've read so much so-so stuff that it might be worth it. So to get the full benefit I'm reading All Systems Red before reading Artificial Condition.

The Lost City of Z by David Grann. A mixed account of Col. Percy Fawcett's attempt to find Z in the Amazon and attempts to trace him. I'm not very far into it but it's very entertaining so far. Closer to a Doyle/Haggard than a serious attempt at fact.

At Age 13 I loved “Exploration Fawcett”. I may well take a look at this.

I've finished Emergence by Nick M. Lloyd. I found this story to be a keeper. It's hard to describe it without giving it away, so I'll not try. But if you like First Contact stories this is a very good one.

I also finished All Systems Red by Martha Wells a second time. It is a top notch story. I wouldn't quite rate it a 5 star, mostly because of length (it's only 160 or so pages -- novella in my book). That might not be fair of me, but it's only like an opening act in a novel. I read this because I bought Artificial Condition book 2 in the series. I decided that if I was going to spend $9.99 on a novella, I'd best not miss a bit of the nuance. Artificial Condition is also a very fine novella. I would consider it the equal of the first, which is pretty significant accomplishment. The stories are very different but the second is certainly dependent on the first. The "murderbot" is a unique character and one I will (sigh!) bite the bullet for and pay another $9.99 for yet a third novella. ---- I will also moan because I think it should have been one David Weber size novel.

Today I'm re-reading James Grady, Six Days of the Condor.

Last read it well over 40 years ago

I finished this and there's some marked differences to how I remember it. I think I must have originally had the 'book of the film' ... 3 days of the Condor.

Thank goodness for the library. This thing's bouncing around Amazon in the $100 ballpark:

Pretty good so far.
