5.01: Fear The Walking Dead - Here to Help

The girl called them "Prowlers"

If it's prowlers, I'd imagine that they've been sitting somewhere for a while, and they've had movies and series as entertainment. It still doesn't explain the toy thing. So maybe the kids are a bit clueless about the state of current world versus the past.

Or maybe the series is set in an "alternate reality" in which no one has heard of "zombies" or "toys." ;)

It is strange that no one ever calls them "zombies" or "living dead". As if no one at all has watched movies or TV.

Both these series keep adding new kids to make it more "real" and no doubt to bring in a younger audience, but they haven't done it very well yet. They miss the pop culture references that the kids would know, even the ten years ago pop culture references. The other problem is that kids get better jobs, move on, and they have to kill them off.

Edit: someone posted a link as to the reason why they weren't called "zombies" but it didn't wash with me. I think it did actually talk about alternative realities.

Yeah, Kirkman said years ago that they had no zombie media. No movies. No comics. No books. The undead doesn't have a cultural past in that world.

The movie list. Brigodon. Fat Easy Pieces. Tender Mercies. It Happened One Night. (Incomprehensible). Waterloo Bridge. The Greener (?). One Flew Over the Cuckoos Next. The Mouse and Men. (Incomprehensible).

The Location List. I assume most of these are in East Coast.

The Final Clue. I cannot find a shape of state from US or Canada to match that figure exactly. So either at Mexico or then it's a shape of a county, and there's too many of them for me to check quickly.

It was a good opening episode. A few things jarred.

1. Ali going for the camera when they needed a saw to help Lucia. Her obsession with recording everything is a danger to her and the group. As the last scene proved.

2. Leaving their base unguarded. They have enough experience to know that this is a recipe for disaster.

3. The kids. Just explain what is so bad about the area. What is the point in keeping it a mystery.

4. Ali has a video interview with Daniel. How small is this world.

Other than that Alica using the piece of the plane as a broad sword was pretty damned awesome. Her skills as The Commander from The 100 coming to the fore.

The first half of the episode was excellent. A new way to show the walkers always goes down well, and the attack in the plane cockpit etc did that well. Also the walkers fence and the heads in the tree was cool. However seeing Logan as a new gang leader enemy was disappointing. Like groundhog day from the two series typical opposition. But typically Fear gets rid of bad guys within a few episodes, (though dirty woman took a while) so I hope they will keep that up. There was then a little, slow section but finally the appearance of living haz suit people at the end brought back the interest. Not quite sure how they will combine the story with the two potential enemies. Perhaps the haz folks will turn out to be friends soon.
